Sheldon Lake State Park & Environmental Learning Center is located in northeastern Harris County. Covering 2,800 acres, the park combines environmental education and recreation; the landscape is shaped by a lake, ponds, wetlands, forests, and prairie. You can fish, hike, paddle, and observe nature there. There is no admission fee.

Nature Trails and Water Landscapes

Baytown Nature Center is a 500-acre peninsula with 7 miles of trails. Possible activities include bird-watching, fishing, kayaking, cycling, and hiking. The combination of its size, trail network, and range of activities gives you several ways to choose a nature outing that suits your interests.

At Houston Arboretum & Nature Center, 5 miles of trails and paths wind through a 155-acre nature sanctuary. The Outer Loop is 1.76 miles long, mostly surfaced with gravel, and passes through savanna, prairie, and forest habitats. This lets you take the trail length and surface into account, as well as the landscapes along the route. The arboretum’s trails are for hiking only.

Each of the arboretum’s self-guided Habitat Hikes passes an educational station. Along the way, they showcase ponds with abundant wildlife and other points of interest. Armand Bayou Nature Center offers 5 miles of walking trails, including a Discovery Loop boardwalk and a bison viewing platform. These examples differ not only in trail length: the features described also include an educational station, a boardwalk, or a place to watch bison.

The Armand Bayou Paddling Trail offers a different perspective on the landscape. It follows Armand Bayou upstream, starting in an area near its confluence with Clear Lake, and continues through Armand Bayou Nature Center to Horsepen Bayou. For your planning, it is important to note that the described starting point is near the confluence; the route does not begin at Clear Lake itself.

At Buffalo Bayou Park, you can get around on foot, by bike, or on the water. Bikes, kayaks, and canoes are available to rent through partner providers. The Sandy Reed Memorial Trail is a ten-foot-wide concrete path that runs through the park on both sides of the waterway. This brings together different ways to explore the park and a specifically described route with a defined width and surface.

Spaceflight, City Life, and History

At Independence Plaza, visitors can board the shuttle replica Independence and explore the historic, original NASA 905 shuttle carrier aircraft. The two exhibits offer different ways to experience spaceflight: you can go inside a replica and then view an original carrier aircraft.

Buffalo Bayou Park Cistern also connects a specific place with its history: it was a drinking water reservoir built for the City of Houston in 1926. The Cistern offers a fully guided tour of its history and architecture. Those interested in its design can connect the structure’s historic purpose with a guided architectural tour.

In the heart of downtown Houston is Discovery Green, a 12-acre urban green space. The Houston Zoo offers another perspective on vibrant diversity, with more than 600 different animal species. Its Galápagos Islands exhibit creates an environment reminiscent of the archipelago’s unique landscapes and marine habitats. The Houston Museum of Natural Science also features a butterfly center, a planetarium, and a giant-screen theater.

The history of Battleship Texas spans two world wars: the ship fought in both. In 1948, it was transferred to the State of Texas to serve as a museum and memorial; it arrived at the San Jacinto Battleground near Houston, Texas. The Battle of San Jacinto is also part of this historical context and is considered one of the decisive battles in American history. Nature trails, exhibits, and historic sites offer different ways to explore Harris.
