The Nabedache Loop in Mission Tejas State Park passes the remains of El Camino Real. The historic route ran through the area where the park is now located. Mission San Francisco de los Tejas was established in a Caddo village in 1690. The trails and mission history offer different historical points of interest in the park.

History on the Trails and in Crockett

Mission Tejas State Park is about halfway between Dallas and Houston and on the northern edge of Davy Crockett National Forest. The park offers tours of historic buildings and along El Camino Real. Programs and tours must be booked before your visit, so plan ahead.

Crockett also has several historical connections. The Monroe-Crook House was built in 1854 in the Greek Revival style. A railroad depot built in Crockett in 1909 later became the Houston County Historical Museum. Crockett was also part of the Chitlin' Circuit for African American blues musicians from the 1940s through the 1960s. Architecture, railroad history and music history each highlight a different aspect of the town's past.

The Houston County Visitor Center and Museum has a collection ranging from ox yokes to railroad artifacts. Tools and an old cotton gin on an adjoining property illustrate a bygone era. The varied objects give the museum collection a broad historical scope.

Forest and Trails at Mission Tejas State Park

Houston County is mostly characterized by mixed pine and hardwood forests. The trails at Mission Tejas State Park vary in length, difficulty and destination. The easy Tejas Timber Trail is 0.5 miles long, loops around the pond and passes several outdoor exhibits. Also 0.5 miles long, the moderately difficult Karl Lovett Trail leads to historic sites.

The moderately difficult Weches Run is 0.4 miles long: it leads from the Pineywoods uplands through bottomland forests to San Pedro Creek. The easy Lightning Trail is shorter at 0.2 miles and winds through pines; you can see one of the park's oldest pine trees there. Trail conditions can change seasonally. Check the current trail conditions before setting out.

Fishing is allowed in the pond and San Pedro Creek without a fishing license. Overnight stays in the park are available at 15 campsites with electric and water hookups and two sites with water hookups. The information clearly distinguishes between the two types of amenities.

More Nature and Recreation Spots

Ratcliff Lake Recreation Area was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1936. The 20-mile Four C Trail can be accessed from there. There are also different camping options: the facility has 56 campsites, including first-come, first-served sites and reservable sites. If you would like to reserve a site, check availability for your travel dates.

The county boat ramp at Houston County Lake is accessible from Crockett via FM 229; it is about nine miles west of Loop 304. For directions, you can refer to the latest official access information.

Culture and Events in Crockett

The Ritz Theatre was built in the 1930s as a venue for performing arts and film screenings. Today, it is a multipurpose facility with 440 seats. Its program includes events by the Piney Woods Fine Arts Association, classic films and children's matinees. Event details may change, so check current dates and programming before your visit.
