History and Landscape

Smith’s distinctive range is reflected in the history of Camp Ford and the landscape of Tyler State Park. The park is north of Tyler in Smith County. Its spring-fed lake covers 64 acres, and more than 200 bird species have been recorded there. At the same time, the park preserves a landscape whose appearance resembles the Pineywoods before logging, fire suppression, and agriculture. The design and craftsmanship of the Civilian Conservation Corps also contribute to the park’s historical significance. Natural surroundings, land-use history, and craftsmanship heritage thus emerge as distinct facets of the park.

For time on the water, you can rent canoes, pedal boats, kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, and johnboats at Tyler State Park. This offers a view of the park that ranges from its landscape to specific rental options for water activities. Since rental offerings can change, check which types are available before making plans.

Camp Ford and Historic Sites

During the American Civil War, Camp Ford was the largest Confederate prisoner-of-war camp west of the Mississippi River. In July 1864, at the height of its occupancy, more than 5,300 prisoners were held there. The superlative describes the camp’s standing west of the Mississippi, while the number refers to its peak occupancy. Camp Ford Historic Park is owned by Smith County and managed by the Smith County Historical Society. The site includes an information kiosk, a walking trail, interpretive signage, and a picnic area. The park is open daily from sunrise to sunset, and admission is free. Check visitor information before making plans, as access details may change.

The Goodman-LeGrand House dates to 1859. It was the first property in Smith County to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places and now operates as a museum. Marvin Methodist Church was the first church in Smith County; its current building was constructed in 1890 and is the oldest church in Tyler. The historical superlatives refer to different measures: for the house, the listing of a property on the register; for the church, the age of the current building within Tyler.

The Smith County Historical Society Museum presents the county’s history through permanent and temporary exhibits. Its permanent exhibition, “20th Century of Progress,” explores Smith County’s development—from growing agricultural products and roses to the discovery of petroleum. Exhibit content may change.

Roses and Experiences in Tyler

The Tyler Municipal Rose Garden offers different measures of scale in its acreage, varieties, and beds: it covers 14 acres, is home to thousands of rose bushes, more than 300 rose varieties, and 600 beds. The Texas Rose Festival’s history began in October 1933, when it was intended to promote the rose industry.

In Tyler, the Brunson Equestrian Center at Texas Rose Horse Park offers riding lessons; the park also hosts numerous events that are free to the public. Kiepersol offers public wine and spirits tastings. These are three distinct kinds of experiences: lessons, events, and tastings. Check specific event dates and ask in advance about a suitable tasting time.
