At Jacob's Well, the destination and the trail options are quite different: Jacob's Well Natural Area offers about 3 miles of hiking trails, while the main trail to Jacob's Well is about 0.25 miles long. One figure describes the trails in the area, the other the route to the destination—a useful distinction when deciding what to focus on during your visit.

Nature Trails Between Springs and Karst

Guided tours of Jacob's Well Natural Area are offered on Saturday mornings from September through June, weather permitting. Check current availability before you arrive. Swimming at Jacob's Well has been suspended since September 4, 2026, until further notice; if this affects your plans, check the latest status before visiting.

In Buda, Gay Ruby Dahlstrom Nature Preserve is a 384-acre area operated by the Hays County Parks Department. It includes just over 3 miles of unpaved hiking trails, as well as a 0.75-mile paved, ADA-accessible trail. Here, the trails differ not only in length but also in surface. Reservations are required to visit the preserve.

Karst Canyon Preserve protects a different landscape: sinkholes, caves and springs define this karst area. It is also home to Wimberley Bat Cave and includes a section of Dry Cypress Creek. The preserve is accessible via Jacob's Well Natural Area. The route follows the North 40 Trail for about 0.5 miles to the Cave Trail.

Limestone Link is a 102-acre area within the Edwards Aquifer Recharge Zone. The trail of the same name is 1 mile long and connects River Recharge Natural Area with Ringtail Ridge Natural Area. This makes it a direct link between two named natural areas, while the acreage describes the protected area.

At Blue Hole Regional Park, water and trails go hand in hand: the park covers 126 acres and includes spring-fed Cypress Creek. Blue Hole has been used as a swimming spot for generations. The park also offers 5.5 miles of hiking trails. Wimberley Hike and Bike Trail and Cypress Creek Nature Trail extend beyond the park boundaries.

Riverside Landscapes and Culture in San Marcos

San Marcos maintains more than 2,600 acres of parkland and nearly 40 miles of trails. The San Marcos River and the Blanco River flow through the city. City Park provides access to the San Marcos River: no reservations are required to visit the park, and there is no admission fee to use the river.

Since 1945, the Meadows Center's historic glass-bottom boats have given visitors a close-up view of the natural beauty of Spring Lake and the San Marcos Springs. The center offers guided glass-bottom boat tours on Spring Lake. It also offers guided kayak or SUP tours using transparent kayaks with underwater LED lights. The different tours offer different perspectives on the water, without requiring you to choose a particular format.

San Marcos offers different ways to explore its urban culture, too. Mermaid March is a self-guided walking tour featuring nine seven-foot-tall mermaid statues painted by regional artists. The Central Texas Wing is housed in a historic wooden hangar dating from 1943 and is home to airworthy historic military aircraft. The LBJ Museum of San Marcos focuses on Lyndon B. Johnson's student years at what is now Texas State University. Located in downtown San Marcos, the San Marcos Art Center supports the city's arts community.

San Marcos Square also brings together different aspects of local life: you can find local cuisine, gourmet Texas fusion, international or ethnic cuisine, and traditional dishes there. The wide selection ranges from regionally inspired food to international cuisines.
