A rock wall gave Rockwall County its name: It runs through the county and emerges above ground in some places. Another layer of history is the National Road of the Republic of Texas. In the mid-1840s, it was surveyed and built through the area that later became Rockwall County. To the west, Lake Ray Hubbard marks the county boundary. The county’s name, the historic road and the lake offer three different reference points for exploring the region.
Museum Grounds and Building History
The Rockwall County Historical Foundation Museum is located in Harry Myers Park in downtown Rockwall. Guided and self-guided tours are available during opening hours. If you are planning a visit, check the current hours in advance. The Hartman Windmill also stands on the museum grounds. The grounds also include the Blackland Prairie Grassland, a conservation project for native grasses and wildflowers.
The Bailey House was built around 1909 with hired labor and moved to the museum grounds in Harry Myers Park in 2017. Its construction and later relocation mark two distinct stages in its history. The Rockwall County Courthouse offers a different view of the architecture: It was built of limestone with carved details in the Modern style.
Trails and Parks
Rockwall has more than 20 miles of trails, including a mountain biking trail. The Squabble Creek Mountain Bike Trail is a six-mile system consisting of six trails. For orientation, two perspectives are useful: Rockwall’s overall trail network and the Squabble Creek Mountain Bike Trail as a specifically named trail system.
In Royse City, parks include about 45 acres of developed parkland and 1.5 miles of nature trails and jogging paths. The City Lake Park Trail and the Walker-Hawk Trail are designated as official city hiking trails. Here, parkland and routes offer different ways to spend time outdoors. Since park inventories can change, check current information about trails and parkland before heading out.
Historic Traces in Royse City
Royse City’s history can also be read in its buildings. Old Jail Park includes a freestanding, single-room jail building known as a calaboose. It was built sometime between 1911 and 1921. The Zaner Robinson Historical Museum is located on the first floor of a building constructed in 1925 and designated a Texas Historic Landmark. While the calaboose represents an earlier period, the museum building links its construction date with a later historic designation.
Local Experiences and Orientation
The Harbor District has waterfront restaurants with panoramic lake views. Individual businesses and access conditions may change; check the latest information before your visit. For wine enthusiasts, Paws 4 Wine in Rockwall County offers a dog-friendly boutique wine-tasting experience. Since offerings may change at the operator’s discretion, it is also a good idea to check what is currently available.
For transportation orientation, there is Ralph M. Hall / Rockwall Municipal Airport: It is an integral part of the transportation network serving Rockwall and the eastern part of the DFW Metroplex. If you are taking its role into account in your planning, check the current status of its facilities and services, as these may change.
