The Paleo-American site of Horn Shelter was discovered in Bosque County in 1970. At the Bosque Museum, a special exhibition features a replica of the site. It also includes interactive elements about a burial site dated to 11,700 years ago. The people of Horn Shelter are considered the oldest known inhabitants of Bosque County and among the oldest known inhabitants of Texas. This museum exhibition brings together a specific archaeological site and a far-reaching chapter of regional history.

Traces in the Museum and in History

The oldest book in the Bosque Museum’s Norwegian book collection dates to 1735. Another historical record is the Joseph Olson Log Cabin: built in 1866, it was the childhood home of Jacob Olson, founder of the Bosque Museum. The book collection and the house offer different ways to explore the history of the museum and the region.

The Bosque County Courthouse also tells the story of the county’s long history. The 1886 building is among the oldest courthouses in Texas still in continuous use. Its year of construction and continued use go hand in hand: the courthouse is not only a historic building, but one that still serves an ongoing function.

Churches, Community, and Art

Norwegian immigration is reflected in several historical landmarks. On June 14, 1869, Norwegian settlers from Bosque County founded Our Savior's Lutheran Church. Cleng Peerson is buried there. St. Olaf Kirke, also known as the “Old Rock Church,” was built in 1886 following the settlement of Norwegian immigrants in Bosque County. For more than 50 years, it served as a center for social gatherings.

The Bosque Arts Center is housed in the only surviving building of the historic Clifton Lutheran College. It serves Bosque County and the surrounding counties as a center for performing and visual arts, recreation, and educational programs. Offerings include educational and continuing education courses as well as workshops. The Roland Jones Memorial Gallery is also located in the Arts Center; it opened in 1989. The county’s cultural history thus spans church community spaces and a venue for art and educational programs.

River Landscapes and Trails

The Bosque River crosses the center of Bosque County from north to south. Lake Whitney, by contrast, lies on the county’s southeastern edge and is a recreational reservoir on the Brazos River. These two bodies of water shape the landscape in different ways: a river that runs through the county and a reservoir on its southeastern boundary.

Near Meridian lies the 505-acre Meridian State Park. The 2.2-mile Bosque Hiking Trail runs along the shore of Lake Meridian. Bee Ledge is a natural overlook with views of the lake. A shorter route is the 1.5-mile Shinnery Ridge Trail: a moderate loop, partly paved and accessible to visitors with limited mobility. The trails differ in length and layout; for the Shinnery Ridge Trail, information about its paving and accessibility also helps visitors plan.

The season also shapes the impression of the park: in spring, lupines, Indian paintbrush, and firewheels bloom in the Wildflower Field. Trail details may change with park management; check the latest information before your visit.
