The Wise County Reunion has used its current venue since 1896 and is considered the oldest recurring public event in the county. This long-standing festival tradition offers a distinctive gateway to the region’s history. If you’re planning your trip around the Reunion, check the current dates in advance.
Historic Traces, from a Cabin to the Courthouse
The Perrin Log Cabin was built sometime between 1855 and 1861. It is the only restored double-log cabin in Wise County that still stands in its original location. Its construction date, restoration and location give the cabin a special place among the county’s historic landmarks. Sam Woody’s Cabin points to a different early trace: it was the first dwelling in the area near Deep Creek.
The Texas Tourist Camp Complex also tells the story of a different era of travel. By 1931, the complex had added three wooden cabins with garages. It is one of the few surviving examples of tourist camps built in Texas in the mid-20th century. At the Wise County Courthouse, meanwhile, the pink granite masonry was preserved during restoration. Together, these sites represent different aspects of regional history: early dwellings, historic travel and a distinctive feature of public architecture.
Museums Offering Different Perspectives
The Wise History Museum is located at the historic Decatur Square, 119 N. State Street. Listed opening hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; check the address and hours before your visit. The museum also has an archive and research center, adding a research dimension to its work.
The Wise County Veterans Memorial Museum places particular emphasis on the undeclared conflicts in Korea and Vietnam, as well as the ongoing War on Terror. The museum aims to share the stories of the United States’ wars from veterans’ perspectives, especially those of veterans from Wise County. Special or group visits and events can be arranged in advance with museum staff. If you’re planning such a visit, contact the team beforehand.
Trails, Water and Landscape
About 40 percent of Wise County consists of high-quality farmland, while 60 percent is woodland and pastureland. Woodland and pastureland therefore make up the larger share, while farmland also plays an important part in the landscape. If you’d like to explore the area by water, the Bridgeport Falls Paddling Trail is a 5.8-mile loop on the West Fork of the Trinity River.
Another way to explore the trails is at the TADRA Point Trailhead, where the five loops of the 75-mile LBJ Multi-Use Trail System meet. The trailhead serves year-round as a base for various non-commercial group events, including endurance riding. If you’d like to attend a specific event, check its schedule in advance.
The Waggoner & Sauder Ranch is a working ranch that is still in operation and is among the oldest and largest in Wise County; its natural environment is diverse. If you’re considering a visit or specific outdoor activities, confirm access and offerings directly in advance. Fossil Pointe Sporting Grounds offers the public experiences at facilities for sporting clays, rifle and pistol shooting. Availability and operating details may change; check current options before your visit.
Practical Travel Information
Decatur’s municipal airport allows visitors to arrive by plane, refuel and take a break. Since airport services can change, check in advance which options are currently available. This makes it possible to incorporate a range of interests—from regional history to trails, water and outdoor experiences—into your trip planning without having to follow a fixed itinerary.
