In Kimble County, river bottoms meet juniper-covered limestone hills. The varied vegetation is often associated with the Trans-Pecos region of West Texas. Large stands of pecan trees and other hardwoods grow in the river bottoms—a distinctive landscape both along the water and in the hills.

Rivers, Birdwatching and Paddling

The North Llano River, South Llano River and Main Llano River run through Kimble County. There are also numerous perennial and intermittent streams. At South Llano River State Park, the natural setting is complemented by a special night sky: the park is designated an International Dark Sky Park. Birdwatchers can use an observation blind supplied with water and food. Birdwatching opportunities are available in different seasons.

The South Llano Paddling Trail also has a designated access point: Flatrock Lane Crossing is an alternative place to launch or take out. Check current conditions before setting out. Those more interested in spending time along the river can find about 800 feet of river frontage at Pete’s Pecan Patch on the Llano River, where they can fish from the bank. There are also areas for day use and picnics in a historic pecan orchard.

At Pete’s Pecan Patch, access for bank fishing and launching non-motorized boats is available from 30 minutes before sunrise until 30 minutes after sunset. Advance reservations are required for parking. Check current conditions and reservation requirements before your visit. This will help you plan among the different ways to enjoy the water—from the paddling trail to spending time along the riverbank.

Fort History and Historic Buildings

Fort McKavett State Historic Site preserves restored buildings from a military fort established in 1852. Self-guided tours on foot or by golf cart take visitors through the original barracks, headquarters, schoolhouse and several officers’ quarters. Check current visitor information before your trip. A short hike at Fort McKavett also leads to the original lime kiln, quarry and Government Springs.

Cloud Point offers a different perspective on the landscape: the bluff overlooks the Llano River Valley and the Johnson Fork Creek Valley. The Kimble County Courthouse is also notable for its architecture. Geometric ornamentation, cast-stone pilasters, a stepped parapet and a square-patterned belt course define the building. It was designated a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 2000.

Junction and Regional Traditions

Junction lies at the confluence of the North Llano River and the South Llano River. The town is also at the junction of Highways 83 and 377 and Interstate 10. Schreiner Park in Junction, along the South Llano River, hosts the annual Kow Kick. This arts and crafts market combines arts, crafts and food vendors with the Kimble County Pageant, live music and family activities. Event details and vendor offerings may change from year to year, so check the dates and program for your visit.

For another glimpse of regional dance history, head to London, Texas, about 20 miles northeast of Junction. The London Dance Hall is considered one of the oldest dance halls in Texas.
