Five major areas with dinosaur tracks have been mapped within Dinosaur Valley State Park. The park lies on both sides of the scenic Paluxy River, a tributary of the Brazos River. The mapped track areas and a clearly named river landscape therefore come together within the same park.

Trails and the Paluxy River Valley

More than 20 miles of trails lead to limestone ridges with views across the Paluxy River Valley. Alongside the mapped dinosaur tracks, the focus also includes trails to ridges and valley views. These are two distinct highlights to consider: one is about the track areas, the other about the landscape views. The river connects the two, as the park lies on both sides of the Paluxy River.

Dinosaurs and Local History

Dinosaur World is the only outdoor museum in Texas dedicated to dinosaurs. Five major areas with dinosaur tracks have been mapped in Dinosaur Valley State Park.

The Creation Evidence Museum offers a distinct focus. It was founded in 1984 to inform visitors about scientific evidence for biblical creation; its exhibits include artifacts, fossils, and documents. The Somervell County Museum, by contrast, is dedicated to the history of Glen Rose and all of Somervell County. This places a clearly defined museum topic alongside a local historical perspective.

Wildlife and Conservation at Fossil Rim

Fossil Rim is located three miles southwest of Glen Rose on U.S. 67. Check road conditions before setting out. There is a self-drive admission option for exploring the wildlife route: the scenic route is 7.2 miles long and can be explored at your own pace. On the Guided Safari Tour, knowledgeable guides lead the way and share insights into the animals and the center’s conservation work.

The two tour formats offer a clear choice between setting your own pace and having a guided tour with explanations. Conservation Investigations adds an interactive experience for guests of all ages. It is open to the public free of charge, both with and without a Fossil Rim admission ticket. Check the latest information about access, admission options, and tour formats before your visit.

Rocks, Water, and Golf

Other places also offer their own distinctive landscapes. At Big Rocks Park, unusually large rocks line the north bank of the Paluxy River. Wheeler Branch Park is located on the shore of Wheeler Branch Reservoir. This lets you distinguish between two different waterside landscapes: the riverbank along the Paluxy and the reservoir setting.

Squaw Valley Golf Club adds another highlight: a 36-hole championship golf course set among centuries-old oak trees. With dinosaur tracks, museums, conservation, and golf, there is a range of different themes to choose from, each explored in its own way.
