The Village Creek Paddling Trail is 21 miles long and has several access points. You can allow two to five hours of paddling time for individual sections; how long you actually spend on the water depends on water levels and current. The trail’s total length and the time needed for a section answer different planning questions: what matters is which stretch you choose and the conditions there.

On the Water

If you’re looking for a loop rather than a section of the Village Creek, the Cooks Lake to Scatterman Paddling Trail offers a different route format: the trail in the Beaumont Unit is 4.8 miles long and forms a loop. This makes it possible to compare the two paddling trails using concrete distances, without the lengths alone indicating how long a trip will actually take.

Village Creek State Park rents stand-up paddleboards, single and tandem kayaks, and canoes. Availability of a particular watercraft depends on park operations and conditions, so check availability before you arrive. In the Village Creek Corridor Unit, there are access points to the creek at FM 418, TX 327, Baby Galvez Road, and US 96.

The Village Creek: US 96 Boat Launch provides access for canoes, kayaks, and small boats. Parking is available for cars and boat trailers; the facility is managed by Hardin County. Access points along the creek therefore differ: the trail has several launch points, while the US 96 facility specifically includes parking for vehicles with boat trailers.

Forest Trails and Diverse Landscapes

Big Thicket National Preserve includes landscape units and waterways in Hardin County, Texas. In the Turkey Creek Unit, more than 20 miles of hiking trails run along Turkey Creek. The unit also includes an extensive area of pitcher plant bogs along the Pitcher Plant Trail. Here, hiking trails alongside the creek and a distinctive bog landscape offer two different ways to experience nature.

The Longleaf Pine Trail leads from the visitor center to an observation platform in a young longleaf pine forest. For another view of the forest landscape, try the Kirby Nature Trail: the loop winds through dense brush, past a swamp with bald cypress trees, and offers views of Village Creek. Its three loops vary in length: the inner loop is 1.5 miles, the Cypress Loop is 0.3 miles, and the outer loop is 0.9 miles.

John Henry Kirby Memorial State Forest is a 600-acre forest in Hardin County. During business hours, the forest is accessible only on foot; special arrangements are required for vehicle access. If you plan to arrive by car, confirm these access requirements before your trip.

History in Sour Lake and Silsbee

Sour Lake began as a resort community called Sour Lake Springs. Visitors came seeking the supposed health benefits of its sulfur-rich mineral waters. Another thread of the city’s history can be found in the Sour Lake Downtown Historic District, which includes 14 buildings dating from 1903 to 1966. Built in 1903 for the First National Bank, the building is Sour Lake’s first brick building and the oldest building in the historic district.

At the Silsbee Little Theater, potluck dinners evolved into multicourse meals served before a theater performance. Together with Sour Lake’s historic buildings, this story offers a cultural perspective on Hardin County alongside its nature trails and paddling routes.
