Migratory birds give Chambers a distinctive natural focus. The Candy Cain Abshier WMA covers 207 acres along Galveston Bay and Trinity Bay near Smith Point in Chambers County and is an important stopover site for migratory birds. The annual Hawk Watch runs from August 15 to November 15. This gives birdwatching a clear seasonal connection; the two bays also place this example in a setting shaped by water.
Wetlands and Waterbirds
Protected wetlands, swamp forests, and bottomland hardwood forests are part of the landscape at the Wallisville Lake Project. The different types of vegetation offer nature enthusiasts more than one way to experience the surroundings. The Mouth of the Trinity River Waterbird Rookery offers a distinct focus: it is home to twelve species of colonial nesting waterbirds. The scope therefore ranges from an important stopover site for migratory birds to a named nesting site with a specific species count.
At the Jocelyn Nungaray National Wildlife Refuge, Shoveler Pond is a 220-acre artificial freshwater pond. The Shoveler Pond Auto Tour Loop is 2.64 miles long. The JJ Mayes Wildlife Trace provides another route length: the four-mile road runs along the levee on the west bank of the Trinity River and is passable in all weather. By length alone, the Trace is longer than the Loop; the two figures provide a clear sense of scale for each route.
Coastal Access and Scenic Overlooks
Chambers County borders the Gulf of Mexico along an approximately 6,000-foot stretch of beach. Fort Anahuac Park offers several acres of natural areas for campers, anglers, and hikers. There is also an extensive pier with elevated viewing platforms. The natural areas and scenic overlooks create different focal points within the park: outdoor activities shape the scene in one area, while the platforms offer an elevated perspective in another.
Building History in Wallisville and Chambers County
At Wallisville Heritage Park, history comes to life in a specific building: the Union Church, built in 1910, was moved from Anahuac to Wallisville. The site also includes a genealogical library and a research center with approximately 2,000 to 2,500 books. The church, library, and research center offer different points of connection to local history and family history.
The Chambers County Courthouse tells a different story of construction. Completed in May 1937, it is a three-story building made of cut limestone blocks and combines Art Deco and modern architectural styles. While the Union Church’s relocation is part of its history, the courthouse stands out for its construction date, materials, and design.
Everyday Life and Industry at the Children’s Museum
The Chambers County Children’s Museum offers nearly 17,000 square feet of indoor play space for children from birth to age twelve. The interior is arranged around a Main Street with a construction site, bank, restaurant, grocery store, dental office, doctor’s office, and farm. The play environment thus draws on different aspects of everyday life.
Another topic is the oil and natural gas industry: the museum’s Oil and Natural Gas Park explains the process from exploration through to the end products. This includes production, refining, and transportation. In this way, Main Street’s everyday scenarios sit alongside an exhibit that makes industrial processes easy to follow.
Texas Rice Festival in Winnie
The Texas Rice Festival takes place every year on the first weekend in October at Winnie-Stowell Park in Winnie, Texas. Its history began on October 3, 1970, when the first festival was held. A rice-cooking contest for home cooks is listed for the 2026 edition; later editions may have different programs. The recurring October date and the festival’s history give this part of the county its own cultural touchstone.
