The Turnverein Pavilion Gut Heil in Bellville is a dodecagonal timber-frame hall with a diameter of 80 feet. Its unusual shape and history as a place for community gatherings reveal two sides of the building: its distinctive architecture and its role in local life. Generations of community members have held celebrations and events here, including family reunions, weddings, birthdays, dances, meetings, and political events.
Landscapes Between Pasture and Woodland
Austin County is characterized by rolling hills, expansive pastures, grazing livestock, and blooming bluebonnets. Winding two-lane roads pass through farmland and alongside blooming wildflowers. The landscape is visible not only in the sweeping views across the pastures, but also along the roads that run through the county.
Stephen F. Austin State Park covers 473 acres of bottomland forest, hardwood forest, and ash swamp. These varied forest and wetland areas give the park its distinctive landscape. You can hike or bike on the trails. Austin County is about an hour west of Houston—a general guide to the destination's location.
Buildings That Tell a Story
The San Felipe de Austin State Historic Site commemorates the place where Stephen F. Austin established the headquarters of his colony in Mexican Texas in 1823. Another historic landmark is the Austin County Jail Museum, housed in the red-brick jail built in 1896, which served as the county jail for nearly 100 years. At Sealy Historical Park, relocated historic buildings, special exhibits, and railroad heritage preserve the history of Sealy, Austin County, and Texas.
Historic halls also reveal their architectural forms and purposes. The Cat Spring Agricultural Society Hall, located in Austin County, was built in 1902 to serve the area's German and Czech families. The hall was designed in a dodecagonal shape with a large central support post intended to provide more room for dancing. Newman's Castle showcases a different architectural style. The complex includes a moat, a working 3,000-pound drawbridge, a chapel, five round towers, a courtyard, and a central keep.
Guardian Angel Catholic Church connects architectural history with community history. Completed in 1915, it is a Painted Church with elaborately painted walls and columns, as well as stained-glass windows. The congregation was founded in 1892 by several Czech families who had relocated from Fayette County to an area about 3 miles southeast of Wallis, Texas. For private prayer, the church is open daily from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

For a different taste of the local food and drink scene, visit Yellow Brick Road Winery in Sealy, where you can enjoy locally made wine in the tasting room along with live piano performances. A few miles east of Bellville, Huff Brewing Company has a taproom serving German-style craft beer, including a Munich Helles and an amber lager inspired by German beer. The Austin County Fair is a long-standing Bellville tradition, featuring rodeo events, entertainment, and carnival attractions.
