At the Texas Travel Information Center at Orange, a boardwalk features interpretive exhibits about Blue Elbow Swamp; the Stark Museum of Art showcases Western art and art by Indigenous peoples of the Americas. Orange County’s timber history adds another dimension. Explore Orange through nature, culture, and regional history.

Art and History of Orange County

The Stark Museum of Art’s collection areas offer different cultural perspectives. If you’re interested in art with a range of connections, the museum brings together American Western art and art by Indigenous peoples of the Americas.

Orange County’s history offers another perspective. The sawmill industry began there in the 1820s with hand-powered logging. For more than 100 years, the sawmill and timber industries shaped life in the county.

The Lutcher Memorial Church Building also offers a distinct historical point of interest: it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The long history of a defining industry and the listing of a specifically named building thus offer distinct historical perspectives.

Swamp, Birdwatching, and Forest

The Texas Travel Information Center at Orange is on the westbound frontage road of IH 10; its address is 1708 Interstate 10 W., Orange, Texas 77632. It has a boardwalk with interpretive exhibits about Blue Elbow Swamp. At Tony Houseman WMA, a 600-foot-long boardwalk provides access to the swamp at the Texas Travel Information Center.

Shangri La offers a different natural setting: this oasis of more than 250 acres lies along the waterways of Adams Bayou in Orange, Texas. Its size and waterside location offer a different experience from the boardwalks.

Lower Neches WMA is open for fishing and other recreational activities from September 1 through October 31 and from February 1 through August 31. Check these dates before your visit if you plan to fish or take part in other recreational activities there.

A trail in the Nelda Stark Unit of Lower Neches WMA ends at Gum Island. The Old River Unit has a designated wildlife viewing area; nearby, migratory waterfowl, shorebirds, and other nesting land birds forage. A trail with a named destination and a birdwatching spot thus offer distinct experiences. Claiborne West Park also offers opportunities to see species typical of the Big Thicket forests.

Wine and Fishing Tournaments

Free State Cellars invites visitors to explore its wine selection. Fishing tournaments are regularly held on the Sabine River in Orange. These tournaments include a family-friendly festival with free concerts and fairground attractions. Wine and the festival program offer two distinct ways for travelers to enjoy local experiences.
