Franklin: Cemetery and Historic Routes

More than 1,300 graves are located in Franklin Cemetery, including those of four local musicians who achieved national recognition. The cemetery land was transferred to Robertson County in 1880.

Two designated routes pass through Franklin: the El Camino Real de los Tejas National Historic Trail and the Texas Historic Brazos Trail. Alongside the specific history of the cemetery, these provide two connections to historic routes.

Hearne: Railroad, Architecture, and Streetscape

Hearne Depot was built in 1901 and served the Southern Pacific and Missouri Pacific railroads for more than 50 years. On a tour, a curator guides visitors through interactive exhibits and historical objects in and around the depot. Check current tour information before your trip.

Highways 6 and 79 run alongside the railroad lines through Hearne and intersect there. The architecture also reflects another chapter in the town’s history: the current building of St. Phillips Episcopal was completed in the Gothic Revival style in 1912.

A lighted water tower, historically appropriate streetlights, vintage signs, and nostalgic park benches contribute to the look of historic downtown Hearne along Magnolia Street. The streetscape may change.

The Katy Hamman Stricker Library has a distinctive community history: local women operated it as a community library in a former meeting hall of the American Woman's League.

Camp Hearne: Traces of Camp Life

The Camp Hearne historic site preserves building foundations and facilities constructed by prisoners of war at the former prisoner-of-war camp. The Camp Hearne Historic Site and Exhibit depicts the daily life of the predominantly German prisoners of war. Architectural traces and depictions of camp life are presented side by side.

“The Barracks” offers a different format: this 30-minute interactive experience combines historical objects and replicas with hidden codes and clues that lead to a final cipher. Scheduling requirements for the experience may change, so check the latest participation information in advance.

Calvert: Museum and Historic District

Calvert’s former courthouse was converted into a museum in 1966. The Calvert Historic District is listed as “Listed”; its recorded date of inclusion is April 3, 1978.

The Calvert Historical Foundation offers tours of the Calvert Historic District by advance reservation only. Confirm tour availability before your trip.

Events Throughout the Year

The Robertson County Fair is held annually at the fairgrounds on FM 485, west of Highway 6. As dates vary from year to year, check the current event date before planning your trip.

On July 1, 2026, Downtown Fourth Fridays was announced for Hearne as a monthly gathering on the fourth Friday, featuring food trucks. Before your trip, check whether the series is taking place and which dates are current.

Geographic Orientation

The Brazos River forms Robertson County’s western boundary, the Navasota River its eastern boundary, and Old San Antonio Road its southern boundary. Thus, two rivers and one road mark the county’s geographic limits.
