A clock mechanism dating to 1890, a pond inhabited by toads and evening double features set very different tones for a trip to Hood County. In Granbury, architectural history and culture take center stage; at Acton Nature Center, trails, a garden and birdwatching await. Lake Granbury adds activities on the water. This gives you the option to shape your trip around the discoveries that interest you most.

Architectural History and Culture in Granbury

The Hood County Courthouse is a limestone building designed by W.C. Dodson in 1890 in the French Second Empire style. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is also designated a State Antiquities Landmark and a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark. Even a detail inside tells part of its story: the 1890 Seth Thomas clock mechanism was restored by the county to its original working condition.

The Historic Granbury Square was the first courthouse square in Texas to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Offerings around the square include restaurants, bars, live shows, historic museums, specialty retail and a vibrant arts scene. Granbury also promotes an official Foodie Trail featuring Italian cuisine, barbecue and other types of cuisine. Participating businesses may change.

Other buildings add to the historic landscape, each with its own story: the J.F. and J. Nutt Building was built in 1893 from hand-hewn Hood County stone and is designated a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark. The Granbury Opera House dates to 1886; it was restored and reopened in 1975. It is home to the Granbury Theatre Company, which stages eight to ten productions over the course of the year. The program may change.

The Hood County Jail Museum is housed in a jail building built in 1885 that served as the town’s only jail until 1978. Preserved spaces include a gallows room, a solitary cell and a main cell with a freestanding iron cage. Visiting hours are listed as Friday through Sunday, 12 to 4 p.m.; check these hours before your visit.

Trails and Nature in Acton

More than five miles of maintained trails are available for exploring nature at Acton Nature Center. They lead to a natural pond inhabited by toads. The grounds also include the Elizabeth Crockett Memorial Butterfly and Hummingbird Garden. The Elizabeth Crockett Butterfly Trail runs through the butterfly garden and is considered accessible for people with disabilities.

A guided bird walk offers a different experience: Acton Nature Center holds one free of charge on the first Saturday of each month. If you plan to attend, check the latest information in advance. A different story takes center stage at Acton State Historic Site: it commemorates the gravesite of Elizabeth Crockett, Davy Crockett’s second wife.

Activities on Lake Granbury

Activities on Lake Granbury include boating, kayaking, jet skiing and paddleboarding. The Brazos River Authority’s public-use areas include boat ramps, campgrounds and fire rings. Since the condition of these facilities may change, check conditions before planning a visit.

Granbury City Beach is located downtown on Lake Granbury and features a splash park, picnic pavilions and seasonal kayak rentals. Availability may change. The listed hours are 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., or until sunset if it occurs later on a given day. Check the current hours before your visit.

Evening Discoveries

The Brazos Drive-In Theater has been operating since 1952 and is considered the longest continuously operating drive-in theater in Texas. It screens evening double features; showtimes may change. Along with the live shows at the Historic Granbury Square, it offers another way to end the day with a cultural outing.
