The Devils River State Natural Area covers more than 37,000 acres in Val Verde County. In addition to its landscapes, prehistoric rock art and historic buildings offer more to discover. Due to its proximity to the border between the United States and Mexico, Val Verde County has a bicultural identity.
Spring Water and Water Activities
The Devils River is spring-fed and known for its exceptionally clear water. San Felipe Springs are in Val Verde County, on the outskirts of Del Rio. At the Creek Walk along San Felipe Creek, visitors can float, swim and kayak in the crystal-clear water. Water conditions may vary; check the latest conditions before your visit. The waterways offer different highlights: water quality is the main draw at the Devils River, while the Creek Walk features specific activities.
Hiking and Access
At Seminole Canyon State Park & Historic Site, a guide is required for hikes in the canyon area; all other trails can be explored independently. The Canyon Rim Trail in Seminole Canyon is 4.9 miles long (one way). Amistad National Recreation Area offers easy trails for short walks as well as longer hikes. So visitors will find both specific trail information and a wider range of walking and hiking options here.
A Devils River Access Permit is required to access the units of Devils River State Natural Area or the paddler camps. Requirements and fees may change, so check the latest guidelines before your trip.
History at the Museum and in the Townscape
The Whitehead Memorial Museum preserves the history of the early settlers of Val Verde County and Del Rio. It has more than 40 permanent exhibits; this number may change over time. The Cadena Nativity is located on the museum grounds. The remains of Judge Roy Bean and his son Sam Bean are also buried there.
The Val Verde County Courthouse was designed in 1887 and is attributed to Larmour & Watson. The Judge Roy Bean Visitor Center offers photo opportunities at the Judge Roy Bean Opera House and in the saloon. Construction or closures may affect access; check in advance to see if a visit is possible.
Rock Art and Caves
Rock art was painted at Fate Bell and other rock shelters in the Lower Pecos River Country. Panther Cave Site (41VV83) is a large rock overhang in Val Verde County featuring elaborate prehistoric rock art. Panther Cave is named after a large leaping feline figure and can only be reached by boat.
Parida Cave has more than 300 feet of designated trails. Access across the lake may vary; take this into account when planning your visit. Together with the boat-only access to Panther Cave, this shows how the experience differs from cave to cave: sometimes designated trails shape the visit, and sometimes it is the type of access.
