Wharton reveals itself through topics that span very different periods: from the county’s history and the everyday lives of early settlers to computers from the personal computer era and wintering migratory birds. Museums, historic buildings, and natural areas offer different ways to explore the region according to your interests.

History and technology through specific examples

The Wharton County Historical Museum focuses on stories and artifacts from the county’s history. A dedicated exhibit explores the life and career of Lloyd Shoppa. This brings together regional history and the biography of one individual under one roof. The 20th Century Technology Museum covers another period: its computer collection spans from the beginnings of the personal computer era through the 2000s. It also features arcade machines from the 1970s and 1980s. The exhibits make changes in computer technology over those two decades easy to follow through specific objects.

The Danish Heritage Museum of Danevang features artifacts and exhibits about the everyday lives of pioneer settlers. These include the Pioneer House, a restored home furnished with furniture and household items from before 1920. The cultural connection to Denmark also has its own historical significance: in 1995, the Texas State Legislature declared Danevang the Danish Capital of Texas. For group tours, the museum can arrange a communal Danish meal at the museum by prior arrangement.

At Egypt Plantation, Heard built a red-brick home between 1849 and 1854. Cattle were raised there, and cotton, corn, and sugarcane were grown. These details show two sides of the historic plantation: its home and its agricultural use. The widow’s walk remains at the site of the Pierce Hotel and is considered a symbol of the building’s historical significance. Wharton’s railroad depot, built in 1912 and restored, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Architecture, performances, and local involvement

Distinctive features of modernist architecture stand out at the El Campo Library Building, particularly at the entrance, in the light fixtures, and in the signage. Rather than treating the architectural style as an abstract concept, you can look closely at specific design details here. The Plaza Theatre hosts live plays, concerts, and special events. The Wharton County Youth Fair and Exposition is an annual event that promotes educational programs and activities for young people from Wharton County who are interested in agriculture, livestock, and related industries.

Nature and outdoor activities

The D.R. Wintermann Wildlife Management Area covers 246 acres in Wharton County. It includes wetlands managed as a waterfowl refuge. The area attracts wintering bald eagles, sandhill cranes, several species of geese, teal, ducks, ibises, and other migratory birds. The focus here is therefore especially on birdlife in winter. Access is restricted; contact the area manager before visiting.

The Santa Fe Trail in Wharton is 0.8 miles long, mostly straight, and paved. These details give you a clear idea of the trail’s length, route, and surface. At Dinosaur Park, a life-size dinosaur marks the entrance. Paddlers can access the lower Colorado River from a park at the end of Wharton County Road 444. The park is open 24 hours a day, and camping is permitted. Outdoor options vary considerably, from a short, clearly described trail to river access for paddlers.
