Fort Concho was established on the banks of the Concho River in 1867. In San Angelo, public art along the Red Arroyo Trail, seasonal water lilies, and various arts venues complement this historic anchor with nature and cultural experiences. This brings together different ways to explore: a historic walking tour, landscapes and outdoor art, as well as exhibitions and hands-on pottery.

History on the Concho River

Units from all four regiments were stationed at the fort. This regimental history adds a specific perspective on its military past to the site where it was established. Visitors can take self-guided tours. If you are interested in history, you can connect the site with its early founding and the period when units from various regiments were stationed there.

Landscape and Art on the Red Arroyo Trail

The Red Arroyo Trail runs along tributaries of the Red Arroyo through rolling plains and riparian areas. Native plants, wildflowers, and trees grow there, along with birds and various animal species. The trail also features public artworks installed by the local group Art in Uncommon Places. Landscape and art are part of the same experience here: the trail offers a different way to explore than Fort Concho, where its founding and regimental history take center stage.

Water Lilies Throughout the Year

The International Water Lily Collection features blooming displays every year from April through October. This recurring period gives the water lily theme a seasonal focus. Another side is represented by “Texas Dawn”: San Angelo is home to this water lily, created by Ken Landon and declared the official water lily of Texas by the 82nd Texas Legislature. Here, you can discover two different perspectives on water lilies: seasonal floral displays and the story of a named water lily with state recognition.

Parks and wildlife are also part of the area’s nature offerings. The city operates parks around Lake Nasworthy. The San Angelo Nature Center features animals from the Southwest, along with related exhibits and information. While the Red Arroyo Trail brings together plants, riparian areas, and public art, the Nature Center focuses on animals from the Southwest and their accompanying exhibits.

Exhibitions, Pottery, and Arts and Crafts

SAMFA presents exhibitions featuring regional, national, and international artists; admission is free for everyone. Concho Clay Studio offers something different: pottery and clay sculpture classes, workshops, and open studio access for artists of all experience levels. The options range from exhibition visits to opportunities to work with clay yourself.

The Chicken Farm Art Center is a community of artists and craftspeople in a mixed-use complex that was once a chicken farm. On the first Saturday of every month, the center holds an event where local artists from San Angelo and Texas sell artwork, arts and crafts, and merchandise. This recurring event complements the exhibitions and studio offerings with a market featuring works and goods by local artists.

Recurring Events

The San Angelo Stock Show and Rodeo takes place every year and draws more than 150,000 spectators to the Tom Green County Fairgrounds; attendance may vary from one edition to another. The Cinch Roping Fiesta also takes place every year, in October. This gives the Fiesta a place on the annual calendar, while the Stock Show and Rodeo offers another recurring annual highlight. If you are planning your trip around an event, check the specific event dates.
