Trinity takes its name from the Trinity River, which lies two miles to the southwest. The town was founded in the winter of 1872–73. The river also shaped a later chapter in the region’s history: Lake Livingston was created when the Trinity River was dammed in the 1960s. The area thus brings together the founding of a town and the creation of a large lake.
River, Lake, and Nature
Lake Livingston offers recreation for residents and visitors to Trinity County. Near Groveton, the lake is associated with activities such as boating and fishing. Access points and operating conditions can change; check current access information before heading out. Another connection to nature is the Alabama Creek Wildlife Management Area, which is part of the Davy Crockett National Forest. The lake and forest offer different perspectives on the region’s landscape.
Groveton and the History of the County
Groveton is near the center of Trinity County, at the intersection of State Highway 94 and U.S. Highway 287. The town was established in 1882 in connection with the founding of the Trinity County Lumber Company sawmill. This link between the town’s development and the timber industry adds another historical episode to Trinity’s earlier founding story.
The Trinity County Courthouse features neoclassical elements. Its portico, a column-supported entrance porch, extends the full height of the building; the Tuscan columns are arranged in pairs. The grounds are also part of public life: they are used for parades, rallies, and festivals. The events held there may change.
In Sumpter, the first seat of justice in Trinity County, early settler Solomon Adams ran a small general store. His log cabin also served as a hotel. The Old Red Schoolhouse tells another story of the county: construction of the brick building began in 1911, and it had opened by 1915 at the latest. It housed all grade levels until a high school next door was completed in 1928. These dates trace the transition from a schoolhouse serving every grade to an educational site with an additional school building.
More Historic Sites
The Trinity County Museum displays historical artifacts, memorabilia, and photographs documenting the county’s history. The John Henley Hill House was built from 1880 to 1882 and features elements of the Carpenter Gothic style. The Glendale Cemetery remains a chronicle of Trinity County’s history. Together, these places trace a path from architecture and school life to the memories of the county’s people.
