The Lost Pines give Bastrop State Park its distinctive character: this isolated region is home to loblolly pines alongside broadleaf trees. Landscape and cultural history are closely connected here. In 1997, the park was designated a National Historic Landmark, largely because of the surviving craftsmanship and landscape design of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). Visitors looking to explore Bastrop beyond individual attractions will find different ways to experience the region in its nature parks, along the river, and in its museums.
Woodland Landscapes and Trails Between Parks
The hilly, 12-mile Park Road 1C connects Bastrop State Park with Buescher State Park. This scenic road passes through the wooded Lost Pines. While the road connects two state parks, McKinney Roughs Nature Park offers miles of multi-use trails for hiking, cycling, UTV riding, and horseback riding—two different ways to explore the landscape.
In the unincorporated area, Bastrop County manages three public recreation parks, which are free to enter. McKinney Roughs Nature Park is open daily from sunrise to sunset; check the hours before your visit. The trails bring several activities together in one place, while Park Road 1C offers its own road-based access to the Lost Pines landscape as it connects two parks.
Lake and River from Different Perspectives
Lake Bastrop North Shore Park provides access to a 900-acre lake surrounded by loblolly pines. Kayaks and canoes are available to rent. Since availability may change, it’s a good idea to check on rentals before your visit. This lets you plan your time around the lake separately from checking which water activities are currently available.
The El Camino Real Paddling Trail in Bastrop is six miles long. Depending on the current and breaks, paddling the route takes approximately 1.5 to 4 hours, so the time required can vary. The riverside corridor provides habitat for a wide variety of plant and animal species along the river and beyond its banks. The trail thus combines a specific route length and approximate time frame with a diverse river landscape.
History in Museums and Buildings
The Bastrop County Museum & Visitor Center is an official interpretive site and partner of the El Camino Real de los Tejas National Historic Trail. It offers self-guided tours of Bastrop County’s historical medallions and the downtown district. These offer two distinct points of interest: the medallions documenting the county’s history and a tour of the downtown district.
Architectural history can also be traced through specific dates and style names. The Bastrop Opera House was built in 1889. The Bastrop County Courthouse dates to 1883 and features a Renaissance Revival style with Prairie School adaptations. The courthouse and jail complex is designated a State Antiquities Landmark.
The Bastrop County African American Cultural Center & Freedom Colonies Museum is located in the historic Kerr-Wilson House, built in 1890. Four exhibition rooms focus on the Freedom Colonies and the contributions of their community members. Docent-led tours are offered during opening hours; check the hours before your visit. The museum thus connects the history of the building with the history of the communities featured in its exhibitions.
More Museum Perspectives and a Different Kind of Exhibition
In Smithville, the Smithville Heritage Museum displays artifacts and photographs from the town’s early history. It is housed in a Victorian building from 1908; exhibits also include reproductions of the first railroad depot and objects from the MKT and Union Pacific eras. In Elgin, the Elgin Depot Museum is housed in the historic Union Depot, built around 1903. Its program includes changing and permanent exhibitions on Elgin’s history.
The Dinosaur Park offers a very different focus: this open-air museum features lifelike, life-size dinosaurs, with details including variations in skin and coloring. If you plan a visit, check current operating information in advance. Alongside museums exploring the history of towns, railroads, and communities, the park broadens the range of topics with an exhibition focused on natural history.
