A chapter in the history of the Republic of Texas

Washington-on-the-Brazos State Historic Site is considered the place where the Texas Declaration of Independence was signed on March 2, 1836. It is located on the Brazos River. The grounds are suitable for picnicking, sightseeing and birdwatching. At Barrington, the paths are made of compacted gravel and are wheelchair accessible; be sure to confirm accessibility details before your trip.

The Star of the Republic Museum offers a glimpse into the lives of the people who founded the Republic of Texas. In the reconstructed town setting of the Washington Townsite, you can explore crafts, skills and gatherings from the 1830s, 1840s and 1850s on a self-guided tour. Hall and Lott’s Tavern is also part of the site’s history: After opening in 1836, it welcomed travelers and offered food, drinks and lodging. Together, these places show the political founding, community life and travel culture from different perspectives.

Brenham: Museums, Main Street and Culture

At the Blue Bell Museum in Brenham, visitors can take a self-guided tour through more than 100 years of company history. The Blue Bell Ice Cream Parlor serves scoops of Blue Bell Ice Cream. The Brenham Heritage Museum is dedicated to promoting the history, art, culture and humanities of the Brenham–Washington County region.

Main Street Brenham is a National Register district where visitors can explore more than 25 shops. Toubin Park in downtown Brenham features a restored 19th-century underground cistern designated a State Antiquities Landmark. Brenham’s Flying Horses Carousel is considered the oldest carousel in Texas. These historic sites are complemented by live performances: Unity Theatre in the historic downtown area presents a variety of plays and musicals throughout the year.

Burton: Technological History and Nature

The Texas Cotton Gin Museum in Burton houses America’s oldest operating cotton gin. On the museum grounds, Indian Creek Nature Area offers a nature trail and a pollinator garden. There is also a shaded place to stroll and a suitable spot for a picnic. The Burton Railroad Depot adds to the area’s historical appeal: The depot was built in 1870 and rebuilt after a fire in 1898.

Peeka Ranch in Burton offers a different encounter with rural life. By appointment, visitors can take tours of a working alpaca ranch, Monday through Saturday. A reservation in advance is therefore required.

Gardens and Festival Traditions

Chappell Hill Lavender Farm covers 23 rolling acres, with lavender grown on three to four acres. In Independence, the Antique Rose Emporium has an eight-acre nursery and display gardens in Washington County. The two garden destinations have different focuses: one features lavender grown on part of the farm, while the other combines a nursery with display gardens.

The official Bluebonnet Festival of the State of Texas is held annually in historic downtown Chappell Hill. The 63rd annual edition is planned for 2027; check with the organizers for the festival dates. The Chappell Hill Historical Society Museum is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
