Crosby County reveals itself through very different traces of its history: a neoclassical courthouse, museums with extensive collections, memorials in small communities, and the landscape along the White River. The contrast is useful when choosing what interests you on your trip: museums tell stories through objects and themed spaces, while historical markers record specific dates and life stories. There is also a fishing angle by the water.

Architecture and Collections

The Crosby County Courthouse was completed in late 1914 and is listed as a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark. Its neoclassical design is evident in the tall entrance with its triangular pediment and columns. The building therefore provides an architectural focal point alongside exhibits centered on objects and regional life stories.

The Crosby County Pioneer Memorial Museum was established in 1958 in a replica of the Hank Smith House. The original house was in Blanco Canyon and is considered the first permanent home on the Llano. The collection comprises more than 45,000 artifacts documenting life on the South Plains, from Comanche warriors to settlers. Specific exhibits include tools and artworks from Indigenous peoples, an early 20th-century Brush automobile, and a diorama of Blanco Canyon. This brings together a broad regional perspective and vivid individual objects.

The Ralls Historical Museum focuses on the town’s development. The museum is housed in a historic former bank building and features 16 themed rooms. Topics range from agricultural equipment and military memorabilia to a barber shop and an undertaker’s establishment. Unlike the comprehensive collection at the Pioneer Memorial Museum, individual room themes organize the visit here. Exhibits about women from the region and transportation offer another perspective and can be seen at the Prairie Ladies Multi-Cultural Center.

Local History on Different Scales

The founding of Lorenzo is tied to a specific date: On April 10, 1911, the Crosbyton-South Plains Railway ran its first train there. The Lorenzo Cemetery also preserves community history. The first marked grave dates to 1918 and belongs to W. A. Greenhill. These dates tell different parts of the town’s story—the start of the rail connection and a remembrance embodied in a single grave.

Other early traces lead to the Mount Blanco Post Office, which opened in September 1879 with Elizabeth Boyle as postmaster. Near the mesa, pioneer Henry Clay Smith built a two-story stone house in 1877; it was the first permanent homestead in the South Plains region. These places represent different aspects of settlement, from postal history to early homebuilding.

Emma tells a different kind of local story: The former county seat became a ghost town after residents moved to other communities. Today, the Emma Cemetery is the only remaining connection to the people who once lived there. This remembrance of an abandoned place stands alongside traces of founding and community life in Lorenzo.

Blanco Canyon and the White River

Blanco Canyon is a scenic landscape and a historical point of reference for travel, early settlement, and military history in the region. The history of the Crosby County Pioneer Memorial Museum is connected to it as well: The original Hank Smith House, replicated at the museum, was in the canyon. The landscape and museum collection thus offer two different ways to explore the area’s history.

Silver Falls is on the White River. The stone structures there were built in 1935 by the National Youth Administration as part of President Roosevelt’s New Deal programs. White River Reservoir is 25 miles south of Crosbyton on the White River, a tributary of the Salt Fork of the Brazos River. For those interested in fishing, it offers a clear focus: largemouth bass fishing is excellent. Fishing quality and lake conditions can change, so check them before planning a fishing trip.

The themes offer clear options when planning your trip: architecture and collections, individual local histories, or landscapes and fishing by the water. This makes it easy to choose the focus of your stay based on what brings you to Crosby County.
