At the Doss Heritage and Culture Center, a permanent interactive exhibit introduces visitors to the early lives of pioneers and Native Americans, as well as the beginnings of Parker County. The stories of its people are presented alongside the county’s development. For an introduction that goes beyond individual attractions, this theme provides a common thread throughout your visit.
Gardens with Different Stories
Chandor Gardens combines the artistic beauty of ancient Chinese architecture with the elegant style of an English formal garden across 3.5 acres. The interplay of these design traditions defines the character of the grounds. Its history dates back to 1936, when Chandor Gardens began as part of Douglas and Ina Chandor’s private estate, originally called White Shadows. Today, the garden is designated a Local Historic Landmark.
Clark Gardens offers a different focus. The 50-acre garden features historic trees, reflecting pools and a nationally recognized iris garden. A G-scale model train runs through the gardens during the public season, and admission to the gardens includes a ride. You can explore Clark Gardens on your own or as part of a guided tour. Because the train runs only during the public season, it’s best to check current visitor information before your visit.
Trails by the Water and Through Nature
The Boardwalk at Lake Weatherford is a 4,313-foot floating path that connects East Lake Drive and West Lake Drive across the water. It offers opportunities for birdwatching, fishing and observing nature. By contrast, the Town Creek Hike & Bike Trail runs for 4.34 miles through the wooded area around Town Creek. The two trails differ both in length and in their described surroundings.
For a longer route, the Lake Mineral Wells State Park Trailway runs 20 miles west. It begins northwest of Weatherford in central Parker County and ends in downtown Mineral Wells in eastern Palo Pinto County. The trailway is suitable for hiking, biking and horseback riding. Its four trailheads have paved parking, drinking water, restrooms, trail signage and accessible parking spaces. For a different kind of challenge, Quanah Hill offers mountain bikers, hikers and trail runners a demanding, scenic experience in a natural setting, with varied terrain and obstacles.
Soldier Spring Park has more than a mile of connected paved and natural trails for walking and wildlife watching. The same park is also home to the Veterans Memorial, which honors nearly 15,000 veterans from Parker County. Nature trails and remembrance stand side by side here.
History, Community and More Experiences
Pioneer Cabin Park preserves five historic log cabins typical of Parker County. The park includes sites for these cabins as well as ADA-compliant accessible paths. In Weatherford, the Weatherford Downtown Historic District is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Parker County Sheriff's Posse preserves Parker County’s Western traditions.
Springtown offers its own points of interest: the 33-acre city park has scenic trails for walking and jogging. The Springtown Legends Museum preserves stories that have shaped the community. The Parker County Peach Festival, in turn, highlights the local peach industry. For an experience regardless of the weather, Urban Air Adventure Park in Parker County is an indoor adventure park with attractions for all ages.
First Monday Trade Days takes place on the weekend before the first Monday of each month. Since exceptions are possible, check the official calendar when planning your visit. This lets you take the event into account, along with the seasonal model train, while keeping the region’s distinct stories and landscapes in view.
