Lake Texana lies on the Navidad River, eight miles east of Edna in Jackson County. As a reservoir, it connects the waterscape with a range of ways to enjoy the outdoors: hike or bike along the shore, fish, and explore the area’s distinctive trails. The county also has historic sites in Edna and elsewhere that show a very different side of the region.

Trails by the Water and in the Park

The 240-acre Brackenridge Park and Campground overlooks Lake Texana. Its five-mile hiking and biking trail runs along the shore. This continuous route by the lake contrasts with the different selection of trails at Texana Park: there, seven hiking and biking trails total six miles. These trail lengths describe different ways to explore the parks. Trail conditions can change with the weather or maintenance work, so check them before setting out.

If you’d like to ride, the Brackenridge Equestrian Trail is a 12.5-mile loop. Check trail conditions and access requirements before your ride. The different routes give your planning a clear framework: a lakeside trail for hiking and biking, several trails in Texana Park, and a separate loop for horseback riding.

Camping, Fishing, and Wildlife

At Lake Texana, the Lavaca-Navidad River Authority operates two parks and campgrounds, along with additional boat ramps. The parks offer day use, overnight camping, lighted boat ramps, and opportunities for shore fishing. Texana Park and Campground has 141 campsites; the number may change. Check current operating status and available facilities before your trip.

The lake is also a specific destination for recreational anglers: catfish, bass, and crappie are found in Lake Texana. Fish populations and management may change over time. You can also combine your time by the water with a visit to the Texana Community Education Center, which has more than two dozen exhibits featuring live animals. The Center holds weekend programs, nature camps, and children’s camps year-round. Program times and participation requirements may change, so it’s worth checking the latest information beforehand.

History in Edna and the County

In Edna, several stories from different eras sit side by side. The Edna Theatre was completed in March 1950 as the flagship location of the Long Theatre Company. Its Modernist architecture is distinguished by a vertical fin and a large, curved canopy with multicolored neon lights.

The Texana Presbyterian Church also tells a story of relocation and community history. The congregation was founded in 1855 and was the earliest Presbyterian congregation in Jackson County. The church was built in Texana in 1859–60 and moved to nearby Edna in 1884. At the Texana Museum in Edna, visitors can explore exhibits on the Karankawa and a collection of artifacts. The artifacts were recovered by the Texas Historical Commission during an excavation of Fort St. Louis. The Jackson County Monument adds another memorial site: it is eight feet tall, made of pink granite, and bears a bronze plaque.

Birdwatching and Historic Routes

Jackson County has nine birdwatching sites in the Central Coast section of the Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail. In winter, eagles may be spotted on drives along country roads over harvested rice fields. Sightings are not guaranteed, but the season and landscape offer a specific starting point for planning. A driving tour also visits historic homes, and the county has numerous official Texas Historical Markers. Access to some homes may be restricted.

Jackson County brings together water activities and trails, wildlife observation, and historical discoveries. When choosing your accommodation, you can first consider which of these aspects interests you most: time at Lake Texana, exploring the park trails, or cultural history around Edna. This lets you explore Jackson County according to your interests, without following a set itinerary.
