The Tábor–Bechyně railway line is a striking combination of engineering and landscape: in 1929, it was extended across the Duha Bridge to Bechyně. The historic railway still uses a 1,500-volt DC system; the original M400 electric railcar is known as “Elinka.” In this way, the railway itself becomes a part of regional history.

Explore the landscape by train and on foot

The Lužnice Valley can also be explored on foot. A 12.5-kilometre red-marked trail runs from Tábor through the valley to the ruins of Příběnice. The trail starts in front of Tábor railway station, providing a clear starting point. For hikers on the Lužnice Valley Trail, the historic electrified railway can take them back from Malšice to Tábor. Check train services and whether historic vehicles are running before your trip.

Other marked trails in the Tábor area lead to the pilgrimage church in Klokoty, the ruins of Kozí Hrádek, the Old Castle near Borotín and the Hýlačka lookout tower. These destinations add different cultural and scenic highlights to a hike; they do not all need to be part of the same route.

Kozí Hrádek connects a specific trail with the region’s history: Jan Hus stayed there, and the site is associated with the origins of the Hussite tradition. From Sezimovo Ústí 2, you can reach the site in less than an hour along a red-marked trail. The pilgrimage church in Klokoty is a national cultural monument and also a destination for walks.

In the Svákov woodland, you’ll find preserved earthworks from a prehistoric Slavic hillfort, as well as the Chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows. These two sites offer different glimpses into the past: traces of an early fortification and a religious building.

Forest, cave and nature reserves

The Pintovka nature trail runs through woodland above the Lužnice Valley and has 30 information boards. The number of stops gives the trail its own character: here, you can explore the forest along an educational trail, while the valley route is primarily a longer hiking trail.

A different scale awaits you at Chýnov Cave. Its visitor route is about 220 metres long, and the temperature inside the cave is around 5 to 9°C. The cave opened to the public in 1868 and is considered the first cave in the country to have been made accessible to visitors. In this compact space, a distinctive natural experience meets a remarkable history of public access.

Borkovická Blata is associated with its designation as a nature reserve in 1980. The Nový rybník Nature Reserve is also located near Soběslav. These destinations add more natural sites in the region to the forest and valley trails.

Water and a regional perspective

The Jordán Reservoir in Tábor is a place for swimming; boats and pedal boats are available for seasonal hire. If you plan to rent one, check what’s on offer during your travel dates. This means a trip on the water depends on seasonal conditions, while the hiking trails and historic sites offer different experiences.

The Toulava tourism region is associated with Tábor, Bechyně, Milevsko and Sedlčany, and is known for its historic attractions and unspoilt landscape. The attractions also vary in scale: the trail in the Lužnice Valley is 12.5 kilometres long, the red-marked route from Sezimovo Ústí 2 to Kozí Hrádek takes less than an hour, and the visitor route at Chýnov Cave is around 220 metres long. If you’re looking for a hotel in Tábor District, you can start by deciding whether a longer hike, a cultural trail, the cave or a seasonal trip to the water will be the focus of your visit.
