Bechyně offers several specific options for a stay: railway history along the Lužnice, a monastery above the river, museums, walking routes and a spa. To plan your trip, you can first decide whether architecture, exhibitions, a tour of the Bechyňsko or peat treatments should be the main focus.

Railway history along the Lužnice

Regular service on the Tábor–Bechyně railway line began in June 1903. In 1929, the line was extended across the Lužnice to Bechyně, crossing the Bechyňská duha, also known as Duhový most. The bridge has an arch span of 90 metres and stands 50 metres above the water level of the Lužnice. Its deck is shared by road and rail traffic. This structure therefore connects railway and bridge history with a direct view of the crossing over the river.

Monastery, garden and château

The monastery and the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary stand on a cliff above the Lužnice. In the monastery garden, you will find places to sit and a view of the Lužnice valley framed by the Bechyňská duha. This brings the river landscape into view alongside the architecture.

Bechyně Château has been protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic since 1958. The guided tour begins with a walk through the château park. As dates may vary, check the latest information if you plan to make this visit part of your itinerary. St Michael’s Church hosts concerts and exhibitions, adding a cultural use to the historic buildings.

Compare walking routes by distance

The visitor information for Bechyně includes several described hiking and cycling routes through places of interest in the Bechyňsko. Two named circular routes differ in length: the Bechyňské vyhlídky route is 4 kilometres long, while the Okruh Židovou strouhou is 11 kilometres long. This lets you compare the stated distances directly and choose a suitable route for your plans. Check current route conditions before setting out.

Ceramics, local history and culture

The permanent exhibition “Porta Ceramica,” drawn from the AJG collections, is on display at the International Ceramics Museum. The Bechyně Town Museum has a permanent exhibition on the history of the town and its surroundings. Its gallery presents seasonal exhibitions and holds workshops.

The Tourism Museum opened in 2006 and is considered the first museum of its kind in the Czech Republic. It documents the development of tourism in Czechia and Europe. The museum also includes a permanent exhibition on the history of Jewish communities in the Bechyňsko. This gives you a choice of themes for your cultural itinerary: ceramics, the history of the town and its surroundings, and the history of tourism and local communities.

Peat as another focus for your stay

At Bechyně Spa, natural peat from the spa’s own peat bogs near the town is suitable for warming and relaxing the body as a whole. The availability of individual treatments may vary. If peat treatments are to be a key part of your stay, include this in your plans.
