A large, circular village square and richly decorated Blata farmhouses shape Sviny’s cultural character. The Chapel of Saint Vojtěch adds to this, while the Borkovická blata moorland in the surrounding area offers a contrasting landscape. You’ll find different points of interest: village architecture and history in the village, and moorland and trails in the surrounding area.
Village Square and Rural Architecture
Svinenská náves, the village square, is large, spacious and circular in layout. Two ponds complement it, and lime trees and birches grow in the green areas. A monument to the fallen of the First World War stands in the southern part, which is lined with lime trees. Water, trees and a specific place of remembrance give the square its varied character.
Several impressive Blata farmhouses in Sviny feature richly decorated gables associated with the tradition of Selské Baroque. Individual buildings also bring the history of architecture to life: the granary at house No. 7 is a listed monument, and the historic municipal school building was built in 1795. For architecture enthusiasts, there is more than one feature to take in: farmhouse gables, a granary and the school building reveal different sides of the village’s character.
The Chapel of Saint Vojtěch
The chapel is a protected cultural monument, with a late Baroque core dating from the late 18th century. It took on its present appearance after an extension in 1896. Architecturally, it is a detached, octagonal masonry central-plan building with a polygonal bell cupola and a lantern. Inside is a Baroque statue of Our Lady of Sorrows. The chapel thus combines a distinctive form with several layers of history.
Moorland in the Surrounding Area
The Borkovická blata moorland, covering about 900 hectares, lies between Sviny and the neighboring villages of Komárov, Klečaty, Zálší, Mažice, Borkovice, Žíšov and Zaluží. In the wider area around Sviny, the nature reserve protects a transitional bog in a basin with remnants of bog pine forests and characteristic flora and fauna. Wetlands are regenerating in the cutover areas, with protected plant and animal species as well as habitats of European importance. A nature trail runs through the moorland in the reserve; check trail conditions before setting out.
Cycling, Walks and Other Activities
The Greenway Selského baroka cycle route passes through Sviny. For a walk, a path runs over the dams of the Dorotka and Holý ponds. Each option offers a different focus: here, the village is part of a cycling route; there, the ponds and dams are the highlight of a walk.
Inline skaters can travel from Sviny towards Borkovice, Dolní Bukovsko and Veselí nad Lužnicí on well-maintained, less busy roads. Road conditions may change. Recreational and sport fishing are possible at Cihelna Pond; check the current regulations before fishing.
Crafts and exercise also complement the cultural and natural attractions. Keramika U Kočků decorates its pottery by hand using underglaze painting. The multi-purpose sports area, renovated in 2026, can serve visitors and offer a wider range of physical activities.
