A castle shaped by the Baroque period, a medieval bell tower and a chapel on Hrad give Mladá Vožice a distinctive cultural and historical character. The town also offers a museum with art and everyday objects, traces of Jewish life and activities for active days. If you are looking for accommodation, these different attractions can help you tailor your stay to your own interests.
Castle, Church and Bell Tower
Vožický zámek Castle was built between 1570 and 1603. Under the Küenburg family, it was remodelled into its present Baroque form. A notable architectural detail can be found at the main entrance, where historically old, carved gates have been preserved. The church dedicated to Saint Martin was already standing in 1348, when Mladá Vožice was first mentioned. The town’s history can thus be traced through buildings from different periods, without suggesting that they all date from the same era.
The Zvonice – solná věž bell tower is also among the town’s oldest buildings. It was built as a tower-like watch post on elevated ground in the centre. A salt store was located on the ground floor. Its former use and elevated position make the tower a different vantage point from the castle: here, architecture and local history come together in a particularly vivid way.
Museum and Art Collections
The Památník Mladovožicka is currently dedicated to the historian and professor August Sedláček (1843–1926), who was born in Mladá Vožice. He is considered the founder of Czech local and family history and created the monumental work “Hrady, zámky a tvrze Království českého” (“Castles, Chateaux and Fortresses of the Kingdom of Bohemia”). The exhibition also includes historical tableware made of tin, copper, porcelain, stoneware and glass. Alongside local and family history, everyday objects are also in focus.
The museum’s collection includes works by academic painter Ota Bubeníček (1871–1962), who lived and worked in Mladá Vožice. The art hall displays paintings by Czech and European painters from the 17th to the 19th century. The entrance to the Památník Mladovožicka is through the passageway above the Infocentrum. Access arrangements may change, so check the latest information before your visit.
Chapel on Hrad and Jewish Heritage
A royal castle once stood on Hrad, but it was completely destroyed in 1425 during the Hussite Wars. Around the middle of the 17th century, Krištof Karel Přehořovský z Kvasejovic commissioned the Chapel of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary on the site. A Stations of the Cross trail leads up the slope to the chapel. From the west, it can be reached by climbing 32 stone steps; from there, views extend across rolling countryside and green valleys. The chapel is open every year during Advent, at Christmas and Easter, and for the Vožice pilgrimage. Check access information before your planned visit.
Jewish heritage is also part of the town’s history: a group of four former Jewish houses has been preserved on Židovská Street. Only remnants of the walls remain from the Neo-Gothic synagogue; together with an adjoining house, they form a residential building. A memorial plaque on the building commemorates the victims of the Holocaust. The two sites offer different insights into the town’s architectural traces and remembrance.
Activities and Trip Planning
The Mladá Vožice via ferrata is on Pod Hradem Street and is intended for adventurous visitors as well as beginner climbers. The recommended car park is Náměstí obětí nacizmu. From there, the route to the ferrata takes about ten minutes on foot along Majora Boháče and Pod Hradem streets. Before your visit, find out about climbing conditions and, if needed, check the latest parking information.
