Košín combines a water-shaped landscape with a tangible piece of local history. The Košín I Reservoir and the Mokřad Košín wetland represent different aspects of nature around the village; the former silver mining provides a historical point of reference. Those choosing Košín as a travel destination can therefore plan their stay around the landscape, activities or history.
Reservoir and wetland
The 19.8-hectare Košín I Reservoir lies on the Košínský potok stream. Košín is the nearest municipality. In the municipal planning documents, part of the reservoir, together with its bank vegetation, is designated as a local biocentre. This means that the described natural area includes not only the water surface, but also a specific section of the bank.
The Mokřad Košín wetland revitalizes the site of the former Košínský pond. It comprises a main pool with varying water depths, a littoral zone and small pools. The littoral zone is the transition area near the bank between water and land; the additional small pools provide habitats for small animals. The different areas therefore have distinct functions rather than forming a single, uniform body of water.
Planting is also part of the wetland concept: native trees and shrubs have created a natural setting there that contributes to biodiversity and nature conservation. “Autochthonous” refers to plants that originate from the region in question. The planned main pool was designed with a varying depth of 0.3 to 1.3 metres, an approximate length of 82 metres and a water surface area of 755 square metres. These measurements refer to the planned main pool, not the entire wetland.
Silver-mining history and activities
Silver was mined in Košín until 1802. This year marks the end of mining and provides a clear point of reference in the village’s history. By contrast, the wetland focuses on revitalizing the site of a former pond. Those interested in Košín can thus distinguish between a historical economic activity and the village’s present-day natural features.
Košín is considered suitable for walks and hikes. The area is also considered suitable for water sports. This means that both on-foot activities and water sports are options for a stay. For cyclists, cycle route No. 11 runs from Radimovice in the direction of Košín; check the current route before setting out.
Which focus suits your trip?
If you are mainly interested in the landscape and nature, the reservoir and wetland offer different points of interest: the reservoir draws attention to its size and bank area, while the wetland features a layout of a main pool, littoral zone and small pools, as well as native planting. Those more interested in local history will find a clearly defined historical reference in the silver mining that continued until 1802.
You can also choose activities based on your interests: walks and hikes are among the options, as is water sports. For a cycling trip, the information about route No. 11 is a useful starting point, but not a complete route plan. This allows you to choose Košín based on its documented features without assuming that the individual activities form a set itinerary.
