Choustník can be explored through a variety of attractions: the Choustnické skály are known for their weathered rock formations and climbing, while Choustník Castle is an extensive ruin with massive walls and two square palace towers. The Choustník Nature Reserve and the Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary in the village are also worth visiting. If you are looking for a hotel in Choustník, you can first consider whether rock scenery, an interest in climbing or architectural history will be the main focus of your stay.

Rocks, Forest and Climbing

The Choustník Nature Reserve covers 9.9 hectares and was designated in 1949. It includes a rock city formed by ongoing weathering and surrounded by old-growth forest. The bedrock consists of coarse-grained Choustník orthogneiss with distinctive black tourmaline inclusions. This connects the landscape’s shape with a specific geological feature. Those interested in geology can focus not only on the weathered rocks but also on the rock itself.

The Choustnické skály offer almost every form of climbing. Climbing is therefore a focus in its own right, alongside the landscape and its geology. A green-marked hiking trail runs along the edge of the nature reserve. You can reach the Choustnické skály from the car park beyond the village of Choustník by following the green-marked trail towards the castle; the walk takes approximately 15 minutes. Allow around 15 minutes for the walk to the rocks; any time spent hiking or climbing will be additional.

Choustník Castle and the View

Choustník Castle is an extensive ruin with massive walls and two square palace towers. One of the towers was converted into a lookout tower, offering good views across the Soběslavsko and Táborsko regions. The castle thus offers two distinct points of interest: the architectural form of the ruin and the views over these two named regions. If you are interested in historic buildings, the walls and towers provide concrete architectural features; the lookout tower adds views of the surrounding area.

Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary

The Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary in Choustník is a single-nave church with a tower on its west side. “Single-nave” describes a church with one main nave; the layout and the tower’s location are two distinct features of the building. The church was originally Gothic and was founded in the 14th century. It was destroyed during the Hussite Wars and rebuilt between 1673 and 1687. Its history thus combines Gothic origins with destruction during the Hussite Wars and reconstruction in the late 17th century. Those who want to explore culture through sacred buildings as well as castles will find another point of interest here.
