Vlastiboř is best explored through its rural architecture: folk Baroque, historic farmsteads and village squares form a strong common thread. Other highlights include a puppet museum in Záluží, the Easter tradition of “nové léto” and a route that passes through Vlastiboř. If you are choosing a place to stay for a visit combining architecture, local history and an additional walking route, you will find several specific points of interest here rather than just one main attraction.

Folk Baroque and protected buildings

Vlastiboř was declared a village conservation area in 1995. Historic farmsteads are often richly decorated with stucco; folk architecture in the folk Baroque style can be found in Vlastiboř and its associated villages. One specific example is Farmstead No. 12 in Záluží u Vlastiboře: this three-part rural property in the historic centre has been preserved almost authentically and is considered a valuable example of folk architecture. It is a protected monument. Záluží u Vlastiboře also features rural buildings with richly articulated façades, white stucco decoration and colourful exteriors.

The landscape around the farmsteads is also part of the village’s character. Gardens, orchards and meadows gradually merge into the open countryside across the adjoining strips of land along the farm boundaries. This means the view extends from the design of individual façades to the land that forms the transition between the farmstead and the open countryside.

Village squares with distinctive features

In Velká Strana, a chapel and the building known as “Stará hospoda” are part of the village square. In Svinky, a chapel, forge and fire station are housed under one roof. The village square in Záluží includes a pond, a chapel and a forge. Malá Strana has a smaller village square with an inn and a chapel dating from 1893. These examples have different points of emphasis: in Svinky, it is the combination of three functions in one building; in Malá Strana, it is the chapel’s explicitly stated date.

Visitors interested in rural architecture can look beyond façades to the layout and uses of the village squares. Chapels feature in several of the village settings mentioned, while the pond, forge and functions housed together each add their own architectural features.

Museum, Easter tradition and contemporary history

The puppet museum in Záluží displays puppets and nativity scenes, a Black Kitchen, and a living room with period furnishings. Works by Jiří Trnka and Václav Vaněk are also on display. The museum adds exhibits, interior furnishings and the work of the two artists to the picture of rural architecture. If you plan to visit the museum, check the current visiting arrangements in advance.

A report from November 2025 describes the local Easter tradition of “nové léto” as still being observed: on the second day of Easter, girls walk around with “nové léto.” The custom therefore offers a clear seasonal factor to consider when planning your visit.

A route offering another perspective

The “Po stopách selského baroka” route passes through Borkovice, Mažice, Zálší, Klečaty, Komárov, Svinky, Vlastiboř and Záluží. It can be extended to include the Borkovická blata nature trail. This allows you to combine the themed route through several villages with a possible extension to the trail. This gives you two specific options when planning: focusing on the rural architecture along the route or adding an exploration of the nature trail.

When choosing a holiday apartment, you can first consider what you would like to focus on during your stay: the historic buildings, the puppet museum and local tradition, or the route and its possible extension. Vlastiboř thus offers more than one way to explore rural architecture.
