The name Meziříčí derives from its geographical location between the two watercourses, Vlásenický and Pilský. The first written mention of the village dates from 1379. These two clues provide a clear starting point for the village’s history: the watercourses explain the name, while the year anchors the written record. Religious traditions, historic buildings and a more recent project at Hlinkovák Pond add distinct topics to explore locally.
Religious traditions and architectural history
St. Anna’s Chapel is a faithful copy of its predecessor, built in 1846. May devotions are held regularly in the chapel, and a Mass is celebrated on St. Anna’s Day. If you would like to include these occasions in your stay, check in advance whether they fall within your travel dates. There is also a pillar-shaped wayside shrine dating from 1853 at the entrance to the village. In the past, on St. Mark’s Day, a procession led from Dražice along the main road to this shrine. The procession is a historical reference point; for the May devotions and Mass, the timing of your visit matters.
Buildings, park and former brewery
Meziříčský Castle is a simple, rectangular, single-storey building with a tympanum facing the courtyard. Oskar Nedbal, Karel Hašler, Eduard Kohout and Karel Weis visited the castle. As of June 2026, the building and its adjoining park were in an untended state. Check before visiting whether this has changed. The former brewery building has been completely demolished; only small remnants of walls can still be seen among the trees and shrubs. This allows you to consider a surviving building and the limited remains of a former use as distinct traces of the village’s history.
The pond and time outdoors
Hlinkovák Pond in Meziříčí was revitalized in 2019 and 2020; the completed work was accepted on 17 December 2020. This adds a more recent municipal project to the historic buildings. The surrounding countryside is suitable for cycling and walks. This offers a different focus from exploring the area’s buildings and history: if you would like to spend time outdoors, you can explore the surroundings on foot or by bike.
Events and planning your stay
The MexWave association supports a youth music group originally called Mexická vlna and organizes performances and cultural events. If you would like to include an event in your trip, check current dates before planning around it.
For travel planning, there is a distinction between historical points of interest, date-dependent events and activities in the countryside. The castle’s architectural style, its former visitors and the historic procession offer insights into the village’s history; the devotions, Mass and MexWave events require checking suitable dates. Cycling and walks offer another possible focus. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, considering what you would like your trip to focus on can be a useful starting point for planning your stay.
