The historic centre of Mazice is a spacious, circular village green with a pond at its centre. This layout, the buildings around the green and the moorland on the outskirts give the village a distinct character shaped by both culture and nature. If you want to learn about not only individual sights but also the way a place has developed over time, the village green is a good starting point for understanding what makes Mažice special.

Village green and historic buildings

Mazice was declared a village conservation area in 1995. Beside the pond in the middle of the village green stands the Chapel of St Anne, dating from the second half of the 19th century. Another date can be found at house No. 5: the granary next to it is considered the oldest building in the village and is said to date from 1613. It was also among the first buildings to be converted from an original wooden structure into a masonry building.

The stone Baroque bridge is another place where architectural history and religious art meet. A chapel with a statue of St John of Nepomuk, dating from 1671, stands on the bridge; the bridge and its niche chapel are a protected monument. Another date can be read on the smithy: 1853 is inscribed on its gable. These dates relate to different buildings and their features; together, they trace individual moments in the village’s history, though they do not belong to a single building phase.

Mažická Stodola is a restored historic building and the last surviving part of the former so-called Mažický dvůr, house No. 16. The Stodola has spaces for leisure activities and recreational sports, as well as cultural and social events for the community. The building thus adds a shared community space to the historic landmarks; make separate plans for specific events.

Moorland and nature trails

Mazice lies on the edge of peatlands, among fields and meadows. The Veselská blata Natural Monument also includes the cadastral area of Mažice. It protects a transitional fen within a basin mire, with characteristic flora and fauna as well as flooded areas, wet meadows and other wetland habitats. Nature here is therefore more than a general focus for outings: these protected features describe a specific moorland landscape, distinct from the village’s buildings.

The Mažický Nature Trail starts on the village green, leads to the Veselská blata Natural Monument and returns via Zálší. Its themes connect past and present village life in the Blata with local Blata architecture, traditional Blata dress and peat extraction. A description published in 2022 gives circular routes of 4.5 and 2 kilometres, as well as six information panels with tasks for children. Since these route details date from 2022, check them again before your trip. The village of Mažice, the starting point, can be reached by car or bicycle.

In the wider area, the Borkovická blata Nature Trail explores a protected peat bog with typical moorland vegetation. The 6.5-kilometre trail runs mostly along wooden boardwalks. It is distinct from the Mažický Nature Trail, which starts on the village green and returns via Veselská blata and Zálší. For a cycling trip, there is also the signposted 51-kilometre circular route “Na Borkovická blata a za lidovou architekturou”. This longer cycling route covers a different distance from the walking routes mentioned in the 2022 description.

You can tailor your trip to your interests: the village centre and its buildings showcase its historic character, while the nature trails explore the moorland and regional ways of life. When choosing a holiday apartment in Mazice, you can therefore find different points of interest without conflating the historic landmarks with the paths through the moorlands as a single outing.
