In Žíšov, the village square and chapel, local brass band history and the Doubí u Žíšova Nature Monument each offer a different perspective. There is also a Masopust tradition and cycling routes with their own distinct features. You can shape your stay around local history and music, or add nature and cycling to your plans.

The Village Square and the Chapel’s History

At the village square, you’ll encounter the architectural style known in Žíšov as Selské Baroko, a name also used elsewhere in South Bohemia. Farmsteads stand around the square, while smaller agricultural buildings can be found in the other two streets. The village’s appearance can therefore be viewed from two perspectives: the farmsteads around the square and the smaller agricultural buildings along the other streets. Those interested in architecture and settlement patterns will find specific differences here, rather than just a single name for an architectural style.

The chapel adds a precisely dated history to this picture of the village. In 1837, the village judge Jan Šafránek had it built on the site of a bell tower after the bell there had been stolen several times. The chapel was originally dedicated to Saint John of Nepomuk. On June 26, 1907, it was consecrated to Saint Anne. Its construction and later consecration mark two different periods in its history, giving a visit a tangible connection to Žíšov’s religious past.

Brass Band Music and Local Traditions

Another defining local story is associated with Matěj Kubeš, who was born in Žíšov on January 13, 1892, and founded his own brass band, “Blaťácká kapela.” Over the course of his life, he composed around 300 pieces for small brass ensembles. The song “Okolo Žíšova” was first performed in 1999 at a celebration of Kubešova Soběslav. These details trace the story from the biography of a musician born in Žíšov to a later performance of a song whose title refers to the village.

Masopust is also part of local tradition. It includes a masked procession and stops at homes in the village. The village history also mentions a celebration in the village square as part of an international brass band festival held in South Bohemia on the third weekend of July. If you’d like to plan your trip around this festival, check the current program in advance.

Nature and Cycling Routes

The Doubí u Žíšova Nature Monument protects part of a natural acidophilous oak forest in the floodplain of the Lužnice. Its protected zone also includes wet floodplain meadows with temporary and permanent pools, home to specially protected animal and plant species. The area’s natural features thus include both woodland and wet meadows and waterways. If this is of interest, you can explore these different habitats as a focus alongside the village’s appearance and musical history.

Two cycling routes are relevant for cycling, each with different details. The GW Selského baroka cycle route runs from Veselí nad Lužnicí via Žíšov to Borkovice; check route conditions and signage locally. The “Po stopách selského baroka” cycling tour is 24 kilometers long. For the first route, the itinerary and endpoints are specified; for the second, the total distance is given. These details can help you choose based on your preferred route or a known time and distance range, without treating the two tours as the same route.
