A Gothic church, a protected quartz formation and an oak avenue give Mlýny several points of interest for a stay. The village lies in the valley of the Černovický potok. Travelers choosing a destination for its cultural history, geology or landscape can weigh up these themes in Mlýny; there is also a paved cycling route to Psárov.
Geology and oaks to the east
The protected geological site of Křemenný val lies on the eastern edge of Mlýny. This 80-meter-long and 6-meter-high remnant was formed from a quartz-filled fissure in gneiss. Its dimensions give the formation a distinct shape: it is considerably longer than it is high, and its formation is linked to the rock and quartz. For travelers interested in geology, Křemenný val offers a clearly defined local point of interest.
East of Mlýny, near Mrázkův mlýn, is also Mrázkova alej, an avenue of 150 oaks. The avenue has been proposed for registration as a significant landscape feature. Křemenný val is a protected geological site, while the avenue has been proposed as a significant landscape feature. This offers two distinct landscape themes to choose from: rock formations and oak trees.
St. Catherine’s Church: Gothic traces and history
The single-nave Church of St. Catherine in Mlýny dates from the mid-14th century and is originally Gothic. Original Gothic tracery survives in three windows. The church is also a protected immovable cultural monument. The surviving details of the windows provide a tangible point of reference for its architectural history; the single-nave design adds to this picture.
St. Catherine’s was first mentioned in 1379. In 1402, the branch church was separated from the church in Choustník and elevated to parish church status. In 1609, the church underwent major renovation and its tower was rebuilt. These dates mark different milestones: the first mention, a change in ecclesiastical status and a later structural renovation. This makes it possible to distinguish the building’s history from its ecclesiastical development.
Mill and cycling route
About a kilometer upstream along the Černovický potok is the well-preserved mill at “Vařečků,” which is used for recreation. Its location by the stream and recreational purpose set it apart from the architectural history of St. Catherine’s. There is also a stately memorial lime tree in front of the church cemetery entrance; its condition may change over time.
A paved cycling route leads from Mlýny around Strážiště mountain, which has a telecommunications transmitter, to Psárov. Surfaces and access conditions may change; check both before setting out. The mill is located by reference to the stream and an approximate distance, while the cycling route is described in terms of the loop around Strážiště and Psárov as its destination. These different points of reference help distinguish the local landscape features from the cycling route when planning an outing.
