Gothic architectural history, a preserved Renaissance house, and a walking route that links architectural monuments with natural attractions give Soběslav several distinct perspectives. You can focus on individual cultural sites or choose the Soběslavské smyčky as a hiking destination in its own right. Particularly interesting is the contrast between a castle founded in the Middle Ages that is now home to a library, exhibitions in the Renaissance house, and two churches with different features. This lets you shape your visit around your own interests without reducing the whole town to a single period or attraction.

Castle, library, and Renaissance house

The Gothic Rožmberský hrad was founded in the second half of the 14th century by Jindřich I of Rožmberk. The reconstructed north wing is now home to the Soběslav Municipal Library. This lets you view the castle from two perspectives: as a historic building with late medieval origins and as the location of a present-day municipal institution.

Smrčkův dům is the only surviving Renaissance house in Soběslav. It houses the permanent exhibitions “Life in the Blata and Kozácko” and “The Tábor Region Landscape in Fine Art,” as well as a memorial hall for composer Otakar Ostrčil. The topics range from life in the Blata and Kozácko to the Tábor region’s landscape in fine art and the commemoration of a composer. The house thus offers several specific ways to explore cultural history; the exhibitions and memorial hall complement the view of the Renaissance building.

Two churches, different features

Kostel sv. Petra a Pavla was rebuilt between 1493 and 1517 in the style of Rožmberk Late Gothic. These dates place the church in a specific period of construction. Its 68-meter-high tower offers views of Soběslav and the surrounding countryside; access is seasonal. If you plan to visit the viewpoint, check whether it will be accessible during your travel dates.

At Kostel sv. Víta, the focus is on different features: stained-glass windows, a pictorial Stations of the Cross, and an organ that is still in working order. The church is also considered an outstanding example of Gothic architecture from the time of Václav IV. Compared with Kostel sv. Petra a Pavla, the emphasis here is on the interior and Gothic style, while the rebuilding period and tower provide different points of interest at the other church.

A circular route linking architectural and natural attractions

The Soběslavské smyčky form an approximately 13-kilometer circular walking route through Soběslav. The route links significant architectural monuments with natural attractions. This is another way to explore Soběslav, distinct from a visit focused on individual cultural sites. The approximate distance gives you a guide for planning and makes clear that this is a standalone walking activity.

Plan your visiting times

Rožmberský hrad and the library can be visited free of charge during guided town tours in July and August, as well as during library opening hours. Check the latest times before you travel and plan your visit around these options.
