A spiral passage leading down provides an unusual setting for nature topics at Jihlava Zoo: at the PodpoVRCH Environmental Centre, aquariums and terrariums are integrated into the corridor. The two classrooms resemble a boat and a cave. The centre offers educational programmes about animals, nature and ecology; it is also used for interest groups, seminars, lectures and public events. Its programme therefore ranges from nature topics to a variety of learning and social activities.
Museums and Winter Nativity Scenes
The Třešť Museum focuses on the area's industries that have disappeared and explains the importance of the Schumpeter family to the town. Its exhibits include paper and wooden nativity scenes, miniature figures, and figures with heads made of bread dough. These unusual materials and sizes give the nativity scenes a wide variety of forms. In Třešť, the Betlémská cesta opens family nativity scenes during the winter months. The Telč Museum also has its own distinctive focus: the long-term exhibition “Křehká krása rašelinišť” is divided into three sections. At the Stříbrný dům, a guided tour of the interior offers a look at equipment from a royal mint, which was found in the courtyard during renovation work. Rocks, Forest and Trails
The seven-sided tower of Roštejn Castle offers views of the surrounding landscape. A visit can also include a forest walk and a small geo-exhibition near the entrance to the Roštejnská obora. Discoveries of natural history await elsewhere, too: the rare rock fern grows in the Přírodní rezervace Zaječí skok nature reserve. The Přírodní park Čeřínek nature park was established to protect its wooded landscape, remarkable geological formations, and rare plant and animal species.
The Naučná stezka Čeřínek nature trail passes the rock formations Skalní mísy, Mrazové sruby and Žlábkové škrapy, as well as the Přírodní památka Přední skála natural monument. From its rocky outcrop, you can see across the park. The circular trail is 6.5 kilometres long and has 14 stops covering the area's natural conditions and geomorphology. As trails can change on site, it is worth checking the route before setting off.
Another 6.5-kilometre loop is the Pojmannova stezka: it leads from Polná to the Kukle pond and back, and is marked with yellow hiking trail markers. Along the way, it passes through the forest by Kukle pond and continues through Obecní forest. Places to stop for a rest include Doubravník and a covered seating area on the dam at Kukle pond. The same distance therefore describes two different hiking experiences: at Čeřínek, the focus is on natural formations and 14 themed stops, while near Polná, the route loops to the pond and through the forest.
Jihlava: Underground, Museum and Water
The guided historical tour of Jihlavské podzemí lasts 30 to 40 minutes and starts at the underground tour ticket office at Hluboká 1 in Jihlava. Important for planning: the guided tours are not wheelchair-accessible. At the Muzeum Vysočiny Jihlava, the permanent exhibition “Jihlava - město střední Evropy” covers the period from the Renaissance to the Industrial Revolution. The museum building offers step-free access to the first floor.
Vodní Ráj offers a different kind of visit. In summer, its facilities include outdoor pools and a children's paddling pool, as well as an 85-metre slide, a water castle, a wild-water river and aquazorbing. The indoor areas are open year-round and include, among other things, a 108-metre slide, a wild-water river, a whirlpool, massage jets, waterfalls, a sauna and a steam room. This makes it easy to distinguish the seasonal outdoor facilities from the indoor amenities available year-round.
There is also a described option for exploring on two wheels: Městem s ježkem - modrá is a ten-kilometre circular route suitable for children. It follows the Jihlava River to the Český mlýn sports and leisure centre. Three historic beer styles are also part of the local history: March beer, old beer and Grandbier were brewed in Jihlava.
