Bílý Kámen is best understood through its historical landmarks: an 18th-century chapel, a medieval reconciliation cross, and traces of mining. When planning your visit, there is another perspective to consider: the cycle path, bus routes, and road connections offer different points of orientation. This makes it possible to consider the village according to your own interests, whether in its architectural and mining history or in practical onward travel.

The Chapel and Historical Landmarks

The freestanding Chapel of St. Peter and St. Paul dates from the 18th century and is considered a symbol and landmark of Bílý Kámen. Its features include a square floor plan, a hipped roof, and a small four-sided bell tower. During a restoration phase completed in 2023, the original, richly decorated interior paintings were uncovered, fixed in place, fully retouched, and reconstructed in their original form.

A memorial stone bearing the year 1754 stands in front of the chapel’s eastern façade. The roughly rectangular stone has a smoothed front with an engraved ornamental frame. The year probably refers to the surveying of the newly founded village. The village’s history therefore includes both the chapel’s architectural form and a specific date on the memorial stone, which should be interpreted with caution.

A medieval reconciliation cross with bevelled beam edges stands beside the road between Bílý Kámen and Vyskytná. A relief of a crossbow bolt is engraved on both its front and back. These details distinguish the cross from the landmarks at the chapel: here, the focus is a single stone object with reliefs on both sides.

Mining and Historical Routes

The Bílý Kámen mining site represents an initial period of mining, dated approximately to the second half of the 13th century. Mining was carried out using the so-called “to daylight” method. A 225-metre-long ore vein was followed by a single line of shafts. Twenty-seven shafts or prospecting pits have been preserved, with diameters of about ten metres and depths of up to five metres. These figures describe both the course of the ore vein and the scale of the surviving mining traces.

The Hornická naučná stezka in Jihlava has 13 information panels and leads, among other places, to the Bílý Kámen site. The historic Humpolecká cesta between Humpolec and Jihlava also ran through Bílý Kámen. In the forest section between Větrný Jeníkov and Bílý Kámen, older routes have also survived as hollow ways and networks of hollow ways; a connection with historical mining is possible. This possible interpretation is kept separate from the confirmed description of the routes.

Cycling, Buses, and Road Connections

Cycle route 5215 runs through Bílý Kámen and continues toward Smrčná and Rantířov. Check the number and route locally before setting out. Road III/0021 leads to Bílý Kámen and joins road II/523 immediately beyond the built-up area; II/523 connects Jihlava with Humpolec.

ICOM buses connect Bílý Kámen with Jihlava, Humpolec, Žďár nad Sázavou, Úsobí, and Dudín. The bus stop is about 700 metres from the village centre, on road II/523. Check the route and stop location before travelling. These offer different points of orientation for planning: the cycle route passes through the village toward two of the destinations mentioned, while bus services cover several directions.

Landscape and Choosing a Place to Stay

In Bílý Kámen, preserved floodplains along flowing waterways are protected by law as significant landscape features. Thus, alongside the chapel, memorial stone, and mining traces, protected landscape features are also part of the village’s character. If you are considering Bílý Kámen as a place to stay overnight, its cultural and mining history may inform your choice, as may the cycling and bus connections mentioned above. Check the routes and services that suit your travel dates before using them to plan your days.
