Šimanov is a nature-focused choice if moorland, wetlands and a hilly, mostly wooded setting match your travel interests. Šimanovské rašeliniště lies south of the village, with Hajnice to the northwest. The area also offers far-reaching views, Strážník and a European watershed at the edge of the village. Different types of landscape sit side by side here: a valley and slope spring mire, a nature area with various wetland habitats, and surroundings suited to hikes and walks.
Šimanovské rašeliniště south of the village
Šimanovské rašeliniště lies within the municipality, about 500 metres south of Šimanov. It is a valley and slope spring mire covering approximately four hectares, at an elevation of around 605 metres above sea level. This more specific term describes the type of mire more precisely than the general word “moor”. The highly endangered moss species Meesia triquetra is also found here; its local population comprises only a few dozen stems. Alongside its landscape features, this gives the area a distinctive ecological profile.
Hajnice: wetlands and biodiversity
Hajnice lies about 500 metres northwest of Šimanov, below Strážník. The nature area includes wet meadows, pastures, wetlands and a pond in the upper reaches of the Hejnický potok. It covers approximately 18 hectares and lies at an elevation of about 660 metres above sea level. Protected animal and plant species found there include the noble crayfish, the common snipe and the broad-leaved marsh orchid. These habitats and species paint a picture of the diversity of this nature area.
A direct comparison helps with orientation: both nature areas lie approximately 500 metres from Šimanov, but in different directions—the mire to the south and Hajnice to the northwest. Their size also differs considerably: around four hectares compared with about 18 hectares. Both direction and size therefore help put them in context.
Elevation, watershed and getting around
Šimanov’s elevation ranges from 620 to 660 metres; at about 660 metres, Hajnice is close to the upper end of this range. Šimanov lies at the foot of the 713-metre-high Strážník. The European watershed between the Elbe and Danube also runs along the edge of the village. It marks the boundary between the two rivers’ drainage basins and adds another geographical reference point to the elevation details. The landscape ranges from wetlands to wooded heights and far-reaching views. The hilly, mostly wooded surroundings are well suited to hikes and walks in nature.
A named route
The route “Through the Beech Forests to Větrný Jeníkov” follows the road towards Bílý Kámen and Šimanov to Větrný Jeníkov. It complements the nature areas with a named regional route and offers another point of reference when finding your way around Šimanov.
