Horní Dubenky combines an unusually detailed mill museum with a Late Baroque church, named trails and a landscape shaped by wetlands and extensive forests. You can get to know the town from different perspectives: through its architectural and cultural history, its natural features and trails with various points of reference.
The Mill and the Church
The Chadimův mlýn Mill Museum displays the complete equipment of a modern village mill from 1926 across four floors. A Francis turbine at Chadimův mlýn replaced the waterwheel. Visitor parking is available at the museum. The combination of complete mill equipment and a turbine makes the visit particularly interesting if you want to learn how a village mill was set up and what technology replaced the waterwheel.
The church of the Evangelical Church of the Czech Brethren, called Kostel Českobratrské církve evangelické in Czech, offers a different architectural picture. The Late Baroque building has a single nave and a four-sided tower. “Single-nave” describes a layout with one main nave; together with the tower, these are specific features that help you identify the building. The church underwent extensive restoration between 2012 and 2016.
Culture at Different Times of Year
During the summer months, Horní Dubenky hosts the gathering “Parrésia aneb Ráj srdce a labyrint světa.” It brings together the Gospel and culture; the specific program dates vary. So if you want to plan your trip around this gathering, check the dates in advance. The Masopust carnival procession takes place on the weekend before Ash Wednesday. Here too, it is worth checking the specific dates before your trip.
Landscape and Points of Reference Nearby
Wetlands and extensive forests shape the landscape of Horní Dubenky. The natural monument Ještěnice is located in the town. Near Javořice, Studánka Páně is another named point of reference: the spring lies about 500 metres below the summit. The remains of the Gothic castle tower Janštejn stand on a wooded, rocky rise between Nová Ves and Horní Dubenky. These landscape features are therefore quite distinct: wetlands and forests shape the surroundings, while Ještěnice, the spring and the castle tower ruins provide specific names to help you find your way.
Cycle Route, Nature Trail and Longer Route
Cycle Route No. 5128 passes through Horní Dubenky from Jihlávka to Batelov. The Otakara Březiny Nature Trail also passes through the town. The 11-kilometre “Od pramene řeky Jihlavy do sklárny Janštejn” route has several interesting stops in Horní Dubenky. Here, the stated distance provides a specific guide for planning your journey, while the description of the cycle route names its two endpoints. This lets you distinguish between the routes based on the information provided, without combining them into a single route.
The Březinova cesta is described differently again: it leads to Horní Dubenky and continues along the Bor pond to Jihlávka. When planning, it is therefore helpful to consider each route description separately. For Cycle Route No. 5128, the direction and endpoints are given; for the nature trail, its name and course through the town; and for the 11-kilometre route, its length and stops in Horní Dubenky.
