Doupě lies in the valley of the Třešťský potok. A large part of its cadastral area is located in the northeastern part of the Řásenská vrchovina in the Jihlavské vrchy. These describe two different scales of the landscape: the village’s location in the valley and the position of much of its cadastral area within the highlands. Roštejn Castle is also located in the cadastral area of Doupě. The stream reflects the village’s location in the valley; the highlands refer to the larger cadastral area. For a clear sense of the geography, it is helpful to keep these details distinct: they do not describe the same area.

Roštejn Castle: Architecture and History

Roštejn is a Gothic-Renaissance hunting castle dating from the 14th century. It stands on a rocky hill at an elevation of 677 metres; its unusual seven-sided tower gives the structure a distinctive feature. The Lords of Hradec built Roštejn continuously throughout the 14th and 15th centuries. Its historical classification as a 14th-century hunting castle and the construction process spanning two centuries describe different aspects: the building’s historical period and the duration of its construction. The term Gothic-Renaissance places Roštejn between two eras, while its construction history describes the continuous work of the Lords of Hradec. Together, its architectural style, location and origins provide a cultural and historical perspective. The figure of 677 metres refers to the height of the rocky hill, not the tower.

Nature in the Roštejnská obora

West of the castle, a distinctive frost-weathering landform developed at the end of a small valley in the Roštejnská obora: the so-called nivation niche, or nivation hollow. This geological landform is distinct from the features protected in the obora. These include old, primeval-like acidic beech forests, flower-rich beech forests and scree forests. Populations of the hermit beetle (Osmoderma barnabita) and the barbastelle bat (Barbastella barbastellus) are also protected. The natural features therefore include a distinctive frost-weathering landform, several forest types and two specifically named populations. These terms make clear that the obora’s natural heritage includes habitats and species as well as landforms. This allows the geological feature to be distinguished from the ecological features under protection without reducing both to a single landscape characteristic.

Doupě on the Gravel Route

The 70-kilometre gravel route runs from Telč through Doupě to Roštejn and across the picturesque region below Javořice. It lists Doupě as a passage point and Roštejn as a destination; its length and route type offer a specific way to travel. Roštejn Castle lies in the cadastral area of Doupě, while the gravel route passes through the village—two distinct geographical relationships to keep in mind. The distance gives the cycling experience its scope, while the castle and protected areas are cultural and natural points of interest. When choosing accommodation, consider what you want to focus on during your trip: should the gravel route shape your plans, or are you mainly interested in the castle and natural attractions? Both perspectives are based on different features of Doupě and can be given different weight depending on your travel interests.
