Vineyards along the Labe, the Porta Bohemica gorge and the volcanic heights of the České středohoří give the Litoměřice District a variety of distinct landscapes. The district lies in the central Polabí region, at the confluence of the Labe and Ohře rivers. If you are planning a trip here, you can combine landscapes, culture and activities according to your interests rather than focusing on just one theme.
River landscapes, vineyards and volcanic heights
Vineyards stretch along the Labe from Litoměřice through Žalhostice to Velké Žernoseky. These places trace a clear route through the wine-growing landscape along the river. The Porta Bohemica offers a different kind of scenery: the gorge is a striking stretch of the Elbe landscape in the district. Together with the volcanic terrain of the České středohoří, it showcases the variety between the river valley and the highlands.
Milešovka is the highest mountain in the České středohoří. From there, far-reaching views extend across the mountains towards the Polabská nížina and the ridge of the Krušné hory. Around Doksany, the meanders of the Ohře, the landscape of Dolní Poohří and views of the main peaks of the České středohoří also form part of the scenery. If you are looking for different types of landscapes when choosing your excursions, these descriptions offer some ideas to consider.
There are beaches at Žernosecké Lake, as well as opportunities for swimming, sunbathing and water sports. Conditions for these seasonal leisure activities may vary, so check what to expect for the time of your visit.
Routes and connections for getting around
Visitors can reach the district by road, rail and along the Labe River corridor. The Labská magistrála is the district’s main cycling route along the Labe. It passes through Velké Žernoseky, Žalhostice and Litoměřice, making these riverside places key stops on a cycling trip. The eastern branch of the Golden Trail links Úštěk, the area around Třebušín, Kalich, Panna, Litýš, Kamýk and Velké Žernoseky.
Routes with a clearly named starting point are also part of the region’s trail network: a footpath leads from Mnetěš to Říp. You can reach the Opičí hlava sandstone formation by following the yellow-marked trail from the Lukovsko junction. These routes differ from the longer connections: here, the focus is on the starting point and destination, while the Labská magistrála and the Golden Trail link several places.
Fortresses, a monastery and castle history
Litoměřice, Terezín and Úštěk have urban conservation areas or historic town reserves. Terezín also offers a tangible example of European fortress architecture: founded in 1780, the fortress is an example of bastion fortification. It preserves several dozen kilometres of underground mine tunnels, which visitors can still see. At Terezín, both the historic architecture and the underground structures are worth exploring.
Doksany Monastery was founded in 1144–1145 as a Premonstratensian convent with a Romanesque basilica. Its founding date, religious history and Romanesque architecture give the site a different historical character from Terezín Fortress. Ploskovice Château was built in the early 18th century as a summer residence and later became the residence of Ferdinand V.
At Házmburk, the accessible White Tower offers a panoramic view from the castle ruins. In Litoměřice, the information centre can arrange guided city tours, as well as visits to the Kalich observation tower and the underground exhibition “Důl Richard v proměnách času”. If you plan to take part in one of these activities, check current booking options with the information centre.
