A trail about two kilometres long leads from Úpohlavy to Lucký mlýn, making it an easy walk. The former watermill lies between Úpohlavy and Chodovlice. Its Baroque building preserves technical equipment dating mostly from the early 20th century. This shorter excursion therefore combines a manageable distance with a tangible piece of technological history. Úpohlavy is also recommended as a starting point for walks and hikes.

Trails to Házmburk and Košťálov

A route about 4–5 km long leads from Úpohlavy to Házmburk and can be covered on foot or by bicycle. Nearby, the castle ruins stand on a 418 m-high volcanic cone. Házmburk offers views of the České středohoří, the Polabí and the Poohří; Úpohlavy itself lies in the landscape of the České středohoří.

Another route option leads to Košťálov: the distance from Úpohlavy is about 6 km on foot or by bike. The climb is described as moderately difficult, with a steeper final section. The destinations therefore differ not only in the stated distance: Košťálov is also described in terms of the gradient, while Házmburk has a different focus, with castle ruins on a volcanic cone and panoramic views. The southern slopes of Košťálov Hill are protected as a natural monument.

Circular Route and Cycling Routes

The municipality also recommends a circular route of about 30 km, running from Úpohlavy through Házmburk, Třebenice, Košťálov, Chodovlice and Lucký mlýn, and back to Úpohlavy. Unlike the individual routes to a single destination, this option links several named places in one loop. The red-marked hiking trail Zlatá stezka Zemí hradů also runs through the southwestern part of Úpohlavy. Check its current markings locally before including it in your plans.

For cyclists, the Lovosice–Házmburk–Lovosice route passes through Úpohlavy. It is about 50 km long and is described as moderately difficult. Cycling Route 3118 also runs from Lovosice through Sulejovice and Úpohlavy to Třebenice. The circular route therefore has an approximate distance and difficulty rating, while Route 3118 links the named places along a different course. Conditions and markings on cycling routes can change. Check the current signs before setting off.

Chapel and Quarry

The Chapel of the Holy Trinity is late Baroque and has been protected as an immovable cultural monument of the Czech Republic since 1958. One striking architectural detail: its triangular gable leads directly into a bell tower. Together with Lucký mlýn, the chapel reveals another facet of Úpohlavy’s architectural heritage.

The Úpohlavy quarry is designated as a geotourism attraction or geosite and as an excursion site. Paleontological discoveries from the Upper Cretaceous contribute to its significance. Visiting is subject to a clear restriction, however: access is only possible with special permission, as the area includes a military site, a quarry and private property. If you are considering a visit, check access arrangements locally.

Plan Your Journey

There is a railway stop in the northern part of the municipality. If you plan to travel by train, check current passenger services before your journey. The routes offer different options for your outing: from a walk to Lucký mlýn, to the trails to Házmburk and Košťálov, and on to the longer circular route or the moderately difficult cycling route. You can tailor your plans to your chosen destinations and activity.
