A hollow on the banks of the Ohře gives Dolánky Nad Ohří a clear geographical setting. The village lies about five kilometres south of Terezín. Its riverside setting and the named historic buildings define two distinct aspects of the place: the landscape along the Ohře and the local architectural and ecclesiastical history. When choosing a destination for a stay, you can consider which of these aspects interests you most.

The Ohře and the landscape

Swimming in the Ohře is also one of the visitor activities in Dolánky Nad Ohří. The site of community importance CZ0423510 Ohře runs along the river on the western municipal boundary. The area of Dolánky Nad Ohří also extends into the Dolní Poohří Nature Park. These two landscape designations have different geographical points of reference: the site of community importance concerns the river at the western boundary, while the connection with the nature park relates to the municipal area. Thus, the Ohře and the landscape around the village represent more than just a general riverside setting; they are also specifically named protected areas.

Church of St Giles and rectory

The Church of St Giles was originally built in the Gothic style and remodelled in the Baroque style in 1675. A Baroque bell tower stands next to it; the church complex is listed as a cultural monument. Its architectural history thus brings together Gothic origins and a later Baroque remodelling. The late Baroque rectory adds another perspective on the village’s history: it was built between 1788 and 1791, when the local church was elevated to the status of a parish church. The construction of the rectory and the change in the church’s status therefore took place at the same time, but describe different aspects: the building and ecclesiastical development.

Wayside shrine and chapel above the spring

Another historic landmark is the Renaissance wayside shrine. Dating from 1597, it is an exceptionally well-preserved monument from the period before the Battle of White Mountain. Its date places it in a different era from the Baroque buildings around the church. The round chapel above the spring has its own distinctive form: it was built in simplified Baroque forms at the end of the 18th century. The wayside shrine is notable for its Renaissance period, while the chapel stands out for its round shape, location above the spring and simple Baroque style.

Roadside marker and local landmark

Road-related features are also among the village’s historic landmarks. A milestone on the E55 near Dolánky Nad Ohří marked the halfway point between Berlin and Vienna. South of the village, beside the road to Doksany, stands the dead trunk of the so-called Umučený dub. The two features have different emphases: the milestone points to a connection between two European cities, while the named tree is linked to a local route. Together, they complement the religious buildings with other specific stories connected to roads and the village.

If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Dolánky Nad Ohří, you can choose your destination based on these highlights: is it the Ohře and its landscape that appeal to you, or are you particularly interested in architectural and local history? The riverside setting, swimming as a listed activity and the different historic landmarks offer concrete points to consider.
