Křešice combines the Elbe Valley landscape with sacred architecture and trails for exploring nature and local history. The municipality is home to the Baroque Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary in Křešice and the Early Baroque Church of the Holy Trinity complex in Zahořany. Other attractions include the Holý vrch Nature Reserve, Křemín, two nature trails and the Elbe Cycle Route. This offers visitors a choice of focus for their stay, from architectural history to outdoor activities.

Between the Elbe and the hills

Křešice lies in the Elbe Valley on the river’s right bank, northeast of its course. Here, the Polabí Lowland gives way to hilly terrain that borders the Bohemian Central Highlands. Holý vrch and the surrounding land in the cadastral area of Křešice have been protected as a nature reserve since 2013. Footpaths run along its northern and southern slopes, but no official trail leads to the summit. Křemín, at 244 m, is distinct from Holý vrch and is of interest to visitors.

The pilgrimage church and local history

The Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary is a Baroque sacred building. It was built between 1708 and 1712 and enlarged between 1729 and 1732. It can be reached on foot via paths from Encovanská ulice, Černá cesta or Bezručova Street. Trail conditions may vary seasonally; check them before your visit. The spring beside the church was lined with masonry in 1703. In 1704, a church commission confirmed eighteen healings described as miraculous and associated with the site.

Vincenc Zahradník is also part of the local history: the priest, philosopher and poet is buried in the cemetery in Křešice. A memorial plaque at the local primary school commemorates his work in Křešice.

The church complex in Zahořany

Zahořany is also part of the municipality of Křešice. Its Early Baroque Church of the Holy Trinity complex comprises a church surrounded by a cemetery with a massive perimeter wall, a four-storey brick bell tower and a pentagonal cemetery chapel. Figurative biblical paintings by Kramolín have been preserved inside. The furnishings include three altars, among them a rare Rococo altar, a Baroque high altar and a Baroque organ.

A brick wayside shrine dating from 1668 and listed as a cultural monument stands in the southern part of Zahořany, about 100 m northeast of the church. Its precise date provides a separate historical reference point alongside the Early Baroque church complex.

Nature trails with different focuses

The Naučná stezka skřítka Křemínka (Křemínek the Gnome Nature Trail) leads through the surroundings of Křešice near Litoměřice and up Vrch Křemín. It introduces visitors to nature and local history and passes the remains of a military fortification from the Austro-Prussian War of 1866. This easy trail is suitable for children, families and schools; it has 11 stops, information boards and interactive features. Trail information may change; check it before your visit.

The Naučná stezka Křešická výprava (Křešice Expedition Nature Trail) has a different focus: it introduces visitors to historic monuments along the route between Nučnice and Křešice in the Litoměřice area. This makes it easy to distinguish a nature and local-history trail whose destination is Křemín from a route focused on monuments along the way.

Cycling and fishing on the Elbe

The Elbe Cycle Route passes through Křešice. Fishing is available on the banks of the Elbe as a leisure activity; local rules apply. Together with its nature trails, the area offers visitors a range of ways to enjoy a stay focused on culture, landscape or outdoor activities.
