When choosing Aussig for a trip, you can focus on striking landscapes, hiking routes, cycling trails or cultural heritage. The scenery ranges from basalt cones and viewpoints to hop-growing landscapes, castles and spa towns. For planning, it is worth deciding first which activities you want to do, then checking routes, opening hours and rules for each destination separately.
Landscapes and viewpoints
In the Milešov section of the protected landscape area, dramatic conical mountains, individual ridges, scree fields and exposed rocks shape the scenery. At 837 metres, Milešovka is the highest peak in this section. The Bohemian Central Uplands are also of volcanic origin: basalt cones rise from fertile fields, and castles stand above vineyards. The lowest point of the České středohoří is on the Elbe in Děčín, at 122 metres above sea level.
Hiking: trails, views and conditions
The Bohemian Switzerland National Park has a network of marked hiking trails; they are maintained according to the marking systems of the Czech Tourist Club or the park administration. As access and closures may change, check the park administration’s notices before your visit. The Ridge Trail is a historic long-distance hiking trail connecting Bohemian-Saxon Switzerland with the Krušné Mountains. Its section through the sandstone area includes Rudolf’s Rock and the viewpoints at Belveder, as well as rugged rocks and deep forests. Check current trail conditions and local closures in advance.
From Milešovka, a 360-degree panorama stretches across the region, while Lovoš overlooks the Elbe. Weather and access conditions may vary. The trail through the Land of Castles leads to the ruins of Házmburk and also includes a viewpoint from the rugged Vrabinec Castle above the Elbe. Check locally for access to the ruins. The trail from Libochovice to Házmburk is 5 kilometres one way, takes around 1.5 to 2 hours at a leisurely pace, and is rated moderate.
Cultural heritage and spa towns
The UNESCO cultural landscape of Žatec and Saaz includes traditional hop fields and buildings used for drying, packaging, certifying and storing hops. Jezeří is a Baroque heritage site in the Ore Mountains; it offers views of the surrounding landscape. The castle’s opening hours are seasonal. Teplice is one of the oldest spa towns in Central Europe and is associated with the meeting between Goethe and Beethoven. Further spa facilities are available in Lázně Mšené and Klášterec nad Ohří. Services and opening hours vary by establishment.
Cycling routes and practical rules
The Elbe Cycle Route runs for 96 kilometres within the Ústecký kraj region. Around Ústí nad Labem, a section of approximately 25 kilometres follows safer cycling principles. The route passes through Žernoseky, where visitors can taste wine; individual producers and availability vary. Check current diversions and route conditions before setting off.
The Ploučnice Cycle Route is an important cycling route in the Ústecký kraj region, connects the Ústí and Liberec regions, and forms part of Czech long-distance cycle route 15. It runs mostly on paved or otherwise hardened surfaces; a road bike is not recommended. More challenging cycling options lead through the Bohemian Garnet area, the Milešov Highlands and the Ore Mountains to the Ore Mountains Museum in Lesná and the Mědník Mining Gallery. Check route conditions and the opening hours of stops in advance.
In the Bohemian Switzerland National Park, cycling is restricted, in accordance with the park administration’s rules, to roads, local roads and designated cycle routes. Horse riding is limited to roads, local roads and marked bridleways; climbing is permitted only at designated locations and at certain times. Check the current park rules before your trip.
Choose your accommodation based on the destinations you actually plan to visit. Seasonal opening hours are important before sightseeing; for tours, check current trail conditions, possible closures and the applicable rules.
