Chotěšov U Vrbičan is best explored through its local and church history. The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, the Chotěšov Madonna and the rectory complex provide concrete points of reference. Information about trains, buses and routes can also help you plan your stay.
The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and Local History
The earliest written record of the village dates to 1057. In 1144, King Vladislav I gave Chotěšov to the newly founded Premonstratensian convent in Doksany. The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary was first mentioned in a document in 1352 as property of the Doksany convent. These milestones offer different insights into the local and church history.
Between 1730 and 1737, the church was completely rebuilt. On 15 August 1737, the Chotěšov Madonna, a Gothic wooden statue of the Virgin Mary, was brought in a procession from the church in Libochovice to Chotěšov. The same day also marked the consecration of the new church. The parish of Chotěšov was re-established in 1852.
Regular services are not held in the church, and it is not accessible to visitors with limited mobility. Check current access arrangements before visiting. This will help you take the conditions for your visit into account without planning to attend a service as part of your stay.
The Rectory and Village Landscape
Another point of interest is the rectory complex at house no. 37. It comprises the rectory, a barn with a stable, another barn, the gardener’s house, the rectory garden, a front garden, a gate, a boundary wall with a small wicket gate, and a garden gate. The residential, agricultural and garden areas offer a different focus from the church building.
The built-up area of the village and its immediate surroundings are also designated as an area with archaeological finds. This means the local heritage is not limited to individual buildings: alongside the church and rectory, the archaeologically recorded area is also part of local history.
Getting There and Planning Routes
The regional railway line no. 114 from Lovosice to Louny and Žatec runs through the western part of the municipality of Chotěšov. The Chotěšov pod Hazmburkem railway stop is located there. Regular bus services connect Chotěšov with Lovosice and Libochovice, as well as with Litoměřice. Check the timetables before you travel so you can plan your journey using current connections.
Neither a hiking trail nor a cycling route passes through Chotěšov. The nearest hiking trail is marked in red and runs around the village to the west, passing through the southern area near Libochovice and continuing east to Doksany. If you plan to take this route, check its current course in advance.
Another option for an outing is the U10 on the Švestková dráha. An optional return journey can be made along an approximately 15 km section of its own railway line from Třebenice via Chotěšov, Vrbičany and Siřejovice to Lovosice. Since this return journey is only an option, not something to assume as part of the outing, check the current service details before including it in your plans.
