In Žalhostice, you can combine nature, water and winegrowing with a look at the town’s history. Radobýl has a marked hiking trail and sweeping views, while relaxation and water sports take centre stage at Lake Píšťany. There is also a winery offering tours by arrangement and the story of a chapel on the mountain slope. The aspects that shape your stay may also guide your choice of accommodation.

Hiking and scenery at Radobýl

The yellow-marked hiking trail to the summit of Radobýl starts south of Žalhostice railway stop on line 087. From the summit, the view extends almost all around: you can see Litoměřice, the Elbe, Lake Píšťany, Lovosice, the Terezín Basin and a neighbouring part of the Bohemian Central Highlands. The hike is therefore about more than the mountain itself; it also offers changing views of the surrounding landscape and towns.

Radobýl is also protected as a natural monument. The area covers 6.256 hectares and extends across the cadastral areas of Litoměřice and Žalhostice. It protects a geomorphologically significant neovolcanic mountain with preserved basalt columns, as well as communities of rocky terrain, rocky steppes, scree and grassland. This diversity adds another dimension to the hiking destination: the mountain is both a viewpoint and a protected area with distinctive geological and landscape features.

The lake, the Elbe and water sports

Lake Píšťany lies between Velké Žernoseky, Píšťany and Žalhostice. It is a popular recreational spot with sandy shores and good conditions for windsurfing and other water sports. This makes it a different focus from a hike up Radobýl: here, time by the water takes centre stage. Which activity you choose depends on whether you would rather spend your stay hiking in the mountains or relaxing by the lake.

The Žalhostická Neckyáda is a separate event: a traditional public water event on the banks of the Elbe in Žalhostice. Boats of different shapes, colours and sizes compete for a trophy from Žalhostice. If you would like to plan your visit around this event, check the dates before travelling.

Winegrowing and tours

Žalhostice is known for fruit growing, especially apricots. Together with Velké Žernoseky, the town is also associated with winegrowing and is part of the Litoměřice wine sub-region. Vinařství pod Radobýlem winery in Žalhostice offers tours with wine tastings by arrangement. They cover the technology used and the way the wine is made. When the weather is suitable, you can extend your visit with a walk through the vineyard to a chapel and a bell tower.

The wine tour thus combines insights into winemaking with time spent in the wine-growing landscape. As it takes place by arrangement, scheduling it is part of your planning. For travellers who would like to discover local winegrowing as well as Radobýl and the lake, it offers a distinct activity—and a different way to experience Žalhostice.

The chapel’s history and planning your route

The story of the Chapel of St Nicholas is set on the slope of Radobýl. It was founded among vineyards in 1360 and restored in 1672 after being damaged during the Thirty Years’ War. In the 19th century, its interior included an altar and wall paintings of Our Lady of Sorrows, St Nicholas, God the Father and the dove of the Holy Spirit. This historical layer complements the nature and wine themes without being conflated with today’s hike or a wine tour.

There is also a specific option for cycling: the Labská magistrála runs through Velké Žernoseky and Žalhostice to Litoměřice. On a broader scale, it follows the Elbe between Dresden and Prague; other cycle routes connect to it or cross it. Check route conditions when planning your specific ride.

Žalhostice has bus and rail connections. If you plan to take the yellow-marked trail to Radobýl, check the connection to the railway stop and the current timetable; the trail starts to the south of it.
