Velemín lies in a picturesque valley beneath the summit of Milešovka and is a gateway to the České středohoří landscape. The entire surrounding area is part of the České středohoří Protected Landscape Area, with more than 500 km of marked hiking trails. The town brings together a clear sense of place and a variety of themes: protected nature, seasonal features at Boreč and cultural monuments in Milešov and Oparno. When planning your visit, it is worth keeping these highlights distinct: a nature trail, routes between places and historic buildings represent different aspects of the area.

Mountain landscape and protected nature

Part of Milešovka is designated as a national nature reserve. It protects forest ecosystems on the slopes of the distinctive trachyte cone, as well as rock and scree communities. The mountain is therefore not only a prominent landmark above the valley, but also a place with designated habitats. There is also a 19 m-high observation tower on Milešovka.

Another mountain in the area is the 553 m-high Ostrý, which is volcanic in origin. It lies between Milešov, Velemín, Kocourov and Březno. The ruins of Ostrý Castle are on its summit, and its slopes are covered in mixed forest. These two mountains showcase different landscape features: the parts of Milešovka designated as a nature reserve and Ostrý’s wooded slopes, with the castle ruins on its summit.

Nature trail, ventaroles and routes

The Boreč nature trail starts in the village of Režný Újezd, below the chapel. It has nine stops and two viewpoints. The unique phenomenon of the ventaroles at Boreč can be observed especially in winter. For visitors wishing to plan around seasonal nature features, this offers a clear point of reference: the ventaroles are particularly relevant to winter planning, while other routes in the area are described as hiking or cycling routes.

A green-marked hiking trail runs around Milešovský rybník, connecting Velemín and Milešov and suitable for hiking and cycling trips. Another possible route to the ruins of Oparno Castle leads from Velemín along a green-marked hiking trail through the Opárenské Valley. These examples differ both in their destinations and in their intended use: the trail by the pond connects two places, while the trail through the valley leads towards castle ruins. It is a good idea to check the current route before setting out on marked trails.

Opárenské Valley and environmental education

The picturesque Opárenské Valley is about 6 km long and stretches from Velemín to Malé Žernoseky. The ruins of Oparno Castle lie north of the village of Oparno, within the cadastral area of the municipality of Velemín. This distinguishes the valley as a geographical feature from a specific historic destination in the surrounding area, without treating both as the same route. Opárenský Mill serves as an environmental education centre. If you would like to include this in your plans, check before visiting whether it is currently open.

Cultural monuments in Milešov and Oparno

The Church of St Anthony of Padua in Milešov is a Baroque religious building dating from 1669–1680. It is protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic and is part of Velemín in the Ústecký Region. Milešov is also home to the restored, protected Kalvárie Chapel. The two buildings offer different points of reference for the area’s cultural history: the church, with its construction period and Baroque style, and the chapel, with its restored condition and heritage protection.

The Baroque garden pavilion Gloriet stands in the château park in Milešov. The then château owner, Jan Leopold Hrzán z Harasova, had it built by Italian master builders between 1701 and 1708. The ruins of Oparno Castle add a different historical perspective to this architectural history: they lie north of the village of Oparno and can be reached from the direction of Velemín via a possible route through the Opárenské Valley along a hiking trail.

Plan your trip and stay

Velemín is easy to reach thanks to its proximity to the D8 motorway, which connects Prague with Ústí nad Labem and Germany. You can consider the natural and cultural highlights of your stay separately: winter ventaroles at Boreč, marked trails around Milešovský rybník or through the Opárenské Valley, and protected buildings in Milešov and Oparno. This keeps your plans focused on specific destinations instead of combining different places and activities into a single route.
