A former inn on the Formanská magistrála, stone milestones and a war memorial give Pohorice a clear cultural and historical focus. The village’s history stretches from a long-distance route to a memorial to the fallen from three places. This brings both regional transport and local remembrance into focus.

The Formanská magistrála and a former inn

The historic Formanská magistrála ran from Prague through Pohorice and on to Dresden, Leipzig and Berlin. It passed through the village; the cities listed trace its wider route, while its passage through Pohorice places it in a specific local context. A former inn at house number 37 has survived from the time of the Formanská magistrála. Two scales therefore meet here: a route spanning several cities and a specific building in the village. The former inn gives the long-distance route a local point of reference, precisely identifiable by its house number and building history.

A memorial to the fallen from three places

In the village square of Pohorice in Martiněves stands a war memorial to those who fell in the First World War of 1914–1918 from Martiněves, Pohorice and Charvatce. It was unveiled on 7 September 1924. The memorial is made of granite and has four sides; the names of the fallen are engraved on three of them. The dedication brings three places together in remembrance, while the names commemorate individual fallen soldiers. The dates refer to different things: 1914–1918 is the period of the war, while 1924 is the later date of the unveiling. This makes it possible to distinguish the scope of the commemoration, the design and the chronology.

The history of the name and the village

Pohořice was formerly also known as Podhořice. Pohorice is considered to have older origins than Martiněves. The first mention dates to 1340, when the village is listed as the property of the Augustinian monastery in Roudnice nad Labem. These different historical details sit alongside one another: the former name relates to the history of the name, the comparison with Martiněves places the village’s origins in context, and 1340 marks the first mention and its connection to the monastery. These details shed light on different aspects of the village’s history rather than describing a single date or event.

Two stone milestones

Next to the former inn is a surviving section of a stone milestone about 1.5 metres high. Another stone milestone stands north of Pohorice, approximately 1.5 kilometres away. Although the number 1.5 appears in both descriptions, it refers to different measurements: for the first stone, it is the height of the surviving section; for the second, it is the approximate distance from the village. This clearly distinguishes the milestone beside the inn from the one located to the north.

When choosing a holiday apartment, you can use these themes as a guide to the character of the place: the long-distance route represents connections between cities, while the memorial represents local remembrance. Would you rather explore the history of a historic transport route, or are you especially interested in commemorating the fallen? This distinction offers a concrete cultural criterion for choosing a destination.
